Peggy Noonan, Mike Murphy Caught Ragging on Palin on Open Mic

Meh. Who cares.

Peggy Noonan is sonorous but hasn't exactly been on the team since 2003. Mike Murphy's pissy he's not running the McCain campaign.

Thanks to Drew.

1 I'm guessing Olbermann will let Murphy on his show now.

2 Exactly where do they refer to Palin ?

For all we know, this could be referencing some point in McCain's acceptance speech.

3 Can someone please direct Peggy to the nearest portrait of Ronald Reagan, and brand his 11th commandment on her forehead? Do it twice, just to make sure the scars take.

4 Here are two more nominal Republicans who make their living sucking at the teat of the DC beltway.  The DC beltway crowd is rattled by McCain / Palin regardless of political party.  As they should be.

5 Um. There is something quite funny listening to Peggy Noonan talk about what americans are about.

I believe the 11th commandment refered to public criticism. This was a private conversation caught on an open mic.

7 Anybody got context? They could've been talking about his position on global warming for all I can tell. It is the cocksucking MSM after all.

9 Why is it implied that their comments are about Palin??

Does this clip not include the full context?  Because if it does, they could be talking about anything.

10 She went off the rails years ago. Go away, Peggy. My theory is that when these people start losing their power and glory they start acting more and more bizarre to get attention.

11

Huh.

Noonan's not exactly attacked Palin in print, did start talking about 'bubbles'.

She called Palin a 'hail mary pass' and a 'clear and present danger' to liberals.

13 I understand the difference between private and public conversation. But anyone used to television studios should know better than this, you can't know if you're on tape. Of course, if she really feels this way, why did she write what she did at WSJ? Sounds odd to me, and even Allahpundit thinks so.

Posted by: George Orwell at September 03, 2008 05:31 PM (AZGON)

14 Noonan is a jealous skant who thinks she is much smarter than she is.  Same goes with her fellow speechwriters, David Frum and Pat Buchanan.  Her writings are more flowery than a mafia boss's funeral and just as sincere.

Noonan actually hit on that and that's why I remember the piece.

Heh.

16 This is much bigger than the rumor stuff.  IMO.  It is one of our own saying that it's over.  Not good.  It also calls into question if her excellent column today stating what a fresh, exciting and scare inducing pick this was, was a bit disingenuous.  Maybe I'm to inside baseballish on this, but it makes my stomach a bit quesy.

Well she's a good writer, but she's more of a feeler than a thinker. Plus she's been pretty wobbly and emotional since 9/11. I think a little prozac and hormone therapy would bring back the Peggy we used to love.

21 It's nice to see professional shills get their words stuck up their ass.

Well, Noonan and Murphy just learned a valuable lesson: Keep your moths shut or the pieces of shit at MSNBC will sell you down the river, no matter if you're "one of the enlightened, less backward" Republicans.

26 It's been a long time since Noonan was brilliant, or relevant.

She is one of those non-conservative Catholics who pretends she agrees with doctrine, but always looks for the angles that call its tenets into question. Put another way, she plays a good devil's advocate, but she attempts to deny that is her role.

What the hell does Murphy mean that this is a cynical decision?  Democrats have been beating that drum as well.

Do I misunderstand the definition?

Nope.  Looked it up:

Main Entry: cyn·i·cal Pronunciation: \ˈsi-ni-kəl\ Function:  adjective  1: captious, peevish2: having or showing the attitude or temper of a cynic: as a: contemptuously distrustful of human nature and motives b: based on or reflecting a belief that human conduct is motivated primarily by self-interest

What the hell is "cynical" about choosing an outsider?

This is what I was saying during the whole NRO don't-flame war.

To live in the cocktail circuit for any length of time and not go native, you've got to hold it in contempt (just like everyone outside it does).

And sipping beefeaters and yachting around chatting up TNR reporters does not show contempt but demonstrates the opposite.

38 A lot of establishment conservatives would have preferred someone like Romney, and I think that's understandable.  They need to figure out that this is a wonderful selection, and hopefully Sarah gets her chance to do so.  I'm going to take a drink every time MSNBC and CNN scroll a line about Palin's kids during Sarah's speech.

Some intern is furiously scribbling away ideas for what to diss Sarah with as she speaks.

Posted by: Shill at September 03, 2008 05:49 PM (8jYMc)

39 Um, does Noonan recognize that Palin is a bit more than a narrative? Is there a chance, just a chance, that McCain had a list of options and personalities that he could select and, based on the many twists and turns of an election, that one might just be optimal rather than a "narrative," that there's some substance in that assumed pretty little head of a barracuda?

To use Noonan's word, her kneejerk reaction is bullshit. Palin is a c-o-n-s-e-r-v-a-t-i-v-e conservative with, amazingly, croosover appeal. She's younger. So what. She's female. So what. She, despite the natterings from "in" crowd of the tea-toteling group, actually has managed a few things before and in a way that made her wildly popular at a time when the term Republican was synonymous with cronyism, corruptocrat, and shithead -  fairly labelled or not. Palin is a strong, independent woman who seems to get things done. That her selection coincides accidentally or intentionally with the rise and fall of Hillary! is immaterial.

Damn, Noonan. Reagan's been gone so long your that ability to calibrate for the capabilities and appeal of the common wo(man) by his/her peers has been lost. I think we're finding you aren't common anymore which is a pity. All that talent to write about what appeals to the masses and you cannot see how Palin appeals to them. What a shame. Narratives indeed.

40 Actually, I'm pretty stoked Pegsters got punked. She has such an over-inflated view of herself and thinks that she and only she has a finger on the pulse of what conservatives and americans want.

She honestly thinks people are waiting with bated breathe for what Peggy thinks and Peggy says we should do...

It would be nice to know when this aired though - was just after the announcement, so a knee jerk elitist reaction?

That would be useful because then I can see why a MSM would waited and fuck over Peg and Mike.

Posted by: topsecretk9 at September 03, 2008 05:54 PM (+Sh+E)

41 Actually, I sort of disagree Shill, I suspect that a lot of Republican pundits are so out of touch with voting Republicans that they have no idea what they think, and don't much care.  I think one of the reasons Republican politicians often go astray from the principles that got them elected is because they tend to become cozy with Republican pundits on the cocktail scene and forget about the folk at home.

Posted by: The Obvious at September 03, 2008 05:55 PM (1g+FW)

42 Noonan's a mercenary.  She'll write anything for money.  She did PR for Enron, and when outed, "forgot" whether they paid her $25K or $50K.  Clearly, her latest column on SP for WSJ was crafted for no other reason than her own remuneration.  She knew what the WSJ editors wanted, and she delivered, her own honesty be damned.

47 Who cares?

McCain--as a trained naval aviator--has taken a calculated risk that has already paid off.

Millions will watch Palin tonight, and then the deal will be sealed. The electorate's opinion is the only one that matters, and from what I can tell Palin is a hit. She's an archetypal American figure, like Davy Crockett.

Plus, Biden seems to be sabotaging every one of Obama's anti-Palin memes as they come up.

When Obama was calling her a former mayor, Biden was calling her governor, and said it was "no mean feat" to govern Alaska.

When Obama said she had no experience, Biden said she was totally qualified to be veep.

I think Joe is a loudmouthed but essentially good-hearted dork, and now that he's in with vicious, unscrupulous fucks who attack teenage girls and babies with Down Syndrome, Joe is feeling a little queasy.

Prediction: Joe is respectful and humorous during the debate, and his side ends up hysterical that he didn't try to rip Palin a new one in the slimiest way possible.

Posted by: Tom W. at September 03, 2008 06:03 PM (jR+wW)

48 Actually, the simpler explanation is that the MSDNC studios have hypnotists off camera. Every pundit who goes on set is convinced that the Right is innately wrong and that Olbermannia is the new religion.

It's either that or, as gp said, it's a paying gig. If adjusting the message will extend a contract, then adjust we shall.

About That Off-Mic Exchange [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
I'm surprised by how many people are content with believing an off-mic conversation rudely and unprofessionally put on YouTube is the full unvarnished final word from a commentator. The honest truth is that no one in St. Paul knows how this is all going to turn out and Peggy Noonan's comments on and off the record reflect that.

09/03 05:58 PM

Why can't KLO just say it's troubling that Peggy would write one thing and then say another? KLO has no problem concern trolling candidates all the time.

Anyway, it would be nice to know when this actually aired...I believe it was right after the announcement and Peggy could do a world of good to point out that she was wrong headed

52 "Prediction: Joe is respectful and humorous during the debate, and his side ends up hysterical that he didn't try to rip Palin a new one in the slimiest way possible."

Because as much of a self-important blowhard as Joe Biden is, he knows and respects McCain, and knows there's no way in the world Obama should be President.  If Biden doesn't sabotage the campaign by accident first, he'll figure a way to do it on purpose.

56 Was this over the air, or leaked by MSNBC? Because if it's the latter, that 's pretty damaging.

Posted by: BaxterJ at September 03, 2008 06:50 PM (TdM7l)

57 Disclosure: I think anyone who thinks Sarah Palin is qualified to run for national office is, well, someone I don't know, because I have yet to meet any of you yet. Who are you people? Why do you feel this way? Why do you want a VP who has never set foot in a foreign country (aside from military bases and airports)? Or one that takes a perfectly charming nowheresville town and decides that its elections should be fought and won on issues like abortion and gun rights? Are wedge issues really what will bring this economy back out of its Bush-instigated tailspin? Oh, I could go on and on...

But that's not my point. My point, and again, it was hard to pick one point, is to those who say that it isn't clear that Noonan and Murphy are talking about Sarah Palin. Really? Seriously? Come on guys. It's pretty darn clear, wouldn't you say? In case you couldn't tell, THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT SARAH PALIN, AND THEY'RE SAYING THAT CHOOSING HER WAS POLITICAL BULLSHIT. THEY'RE ALSO SAYING THAT REPUBLICANS IN POWER ARE, IN FACT, NOT DOWN-HOME TYPES AND THE COMMON MAN, BUT THE PEOPLE MOST LIKELY TO EXPLOIT DOWN-HOME TYPES AND THE COMMON MAN. THEN THEY SAY THAT WHENEVER THEY TRY TO PAINT THEMSELVES AS THE COMMON MAN (SUCH AS IN THE CURRENT CASE, WHERE TRAJILLIONAIRS CINDY AND JOHN MCCAIN PICK SARAH 'HILLBILLY' PALIN TO BE THE RUNNING MATE BECAUSE THEY HAVE 'SO MUCH IN COMMON'), IT DOESN'T WORK.

Well, I'll guess we'll just have to see about that...

It's also clear, in my humble opinion, that they're right on the mark. The choice of Sarah Palin is totally cynical because it shows that all the Republicans care about is winning. They don't care about what's best for the American people at this crucial moment in history. We don't need a VP who thinks the best policy argument for invading Iraq or building a pipeline is that it's 'God's will.' We've seen where that line of thought gets us already, with Bush II.

Her "explanation" seems almost unquestionably to be an outright, and rather craven, lie.  And, incidentally, the answer to "why not Kay Bailey Hutchison" is, in short, "because she sucks," and, in long, "because she's an old-news senatorial hack that would represent a truly cynical pick--a woman senator of no real distinguishing expertise chosen out of pure tokenism--rather than someone who squares the the outside-Washington 'reform' narrative McCain obviously wants to go with, quite rightly for his personal Mavericky history and the strategic landscape facing him in this election."

67 Enlighten the idiot Jack.

Are you saying it Palin's call on drilling in ANWR?  (it's not.) Or what, exactly?

Do you even know what your point is?

My point was obvious and unarguable-that claiming Palin was the governor of the largest state in America is meaningless.  And insulting.

And for the record, I am not for drilling in ANWR.  Yet.  I like the fact that we sit on reserves.  I don't see the need or utility in (literally) burning through them now just because gas is more expensive.

What do you think Obama was doing at Frank Marshall Davis' house?  You think they stopped at backrubs?  Fellatio, man.  Lots and lots of fellatio.  Obama was a skinny little twink.  You know how much those old commies love teenage boys.  Especially mocha twinks.
