McCain Veepstakes

The decisions has been made.

Tomorrow is the official announcement but Drudge has a tease up saying the news will break at 6 tonight.

Consider this your official speculation and prediction thread.

Once again we'll be awarding a month's worth of free AoS HQ content to the winner. Since we know the day and time of the announcement, the tie breaker will be the first person in the thread to correctly predict the nominee.

And now for something to look at while you contemplate your prediction.

Megyn with the glasses....oh yeah, that's the stuff.

1 McCain-Hilton

Well? What's the problem with that? She's got just as much gravitas and twice the intellect of Joe Biden.

Posted by: Christoph at August 28, 2008 11:48 AM (hawOV)

2 Did Megyn get her lips puffed up?  She looks a little different lately.  But just to prove my manliness after that gehy comment.  I would hit it, indeed.

3 My VP pick?

Barak Obama!

Why?

Cause I'm a maverick!

And if you vote for me, you get him anyway.

Maverick!

Posted by: John McCain at August 28, 2008 11:50 AM (ao5cQ)

4 I'm expecting him to pick Goose. He is a good adviser.

McCain/Pawlenty.  Boring, but safe.  McCain is even if not ahead at this point, and is trending upwards.  A boring but safe pick is more likely to preserve a favorable status quo.  The McCain campaign (surprisingly) doesn't appear to be broken at this point.  He shouldn't try to "fix it" with an unconventional pick.

6 Mitt Romney.  Best VP Ever.  Seriously.

Posted by: FloofyParisParamus at August 28, 2008 11:55 AM (KSF7K)

7 He's can't let Virginia go. Mitt will help him in the west even if he isn't on the ticket.
He goes with Cantor. It nails down  Florida too.

Hutchinson ... not an electrifying pick, but a good one. She'd been mooted as a running mate for Dubya in 2000, but the Constitution requires the president and vice-president to be from different states.

It would be the best political move if it were :

Palin or Steel or Hutchenson

Because we really need to get serious about promoting our strong conservative minority represenatives.  Take that bat away from the Democrats and get some serious experience and air time to our lessor known party members.

69 Romney. It's the economy, stupid. Always.

Steele, however, would be a bit of a coup. Could you imagine the gears slipping in the press and on the Democrat machine (but I repeat myself) to see the GOP selecting, egads, one of "the other"? Young but not too much so. Dynamic. Sharp. Personable. Executive experience. Oh, yeah. Kinda funny name. I mean, what kind of name is Michael? And he doesn't look like one of them dudes on the dollar bills.

Obligatory newsbabe update: FOX/MK has a wind machine blowing the wild hair effect going on during this convention reportage. Some would probably consider that hawt.

72 Not sure who it's going to be, but I'm pretty sure it'll be an uninspiring and disappointing pick...possibly even somebody who doesn't make Joe Biden look like a ridiculous pick.

I just have this feeling that tomorrow I'm going to be thinking to myself:  "Wow, I had to wait all this time for that?"

Posted by: Oedipus at August 28, 2008 12:47 PM (5Djkl)

73 I think it should be Biden, that way he can debate himself, that's good TV.  Also, completely takes the VP factor out of it.  Mano v Mano, McCain wins in a walk.

75 After the way in which Romney has shown himself to be an enthusiastic attack dog in the last few days.......adding him to the ticket would actually get me EXCITED.

Choosing Pawlenty?  My reaction:  Eh.  I don't find any negatives, but it's a boring pick, and ultimately I don't know if Pawlenty would wind up having the same sort of name recognition as Biden or whether he can give it back to Biden when Biden attacks him (which he inevitably will).

Choosing Cantor?  I LIVE in Virginia and have never heard of the guy.  *whispers* I hear rumors he's a Jew, though.

81 I don't know.  Mitt, probably.  Yawn.

But it's terrible timing to let it out tonight -- it looks mean spirited.  It's the political equivalent of going to a wedding in a white dress, trying to upstage the bride.

Better to let  the Obamessiah have his big night, and make the announcement in the morning.

If it's Fred (God love him) the Obamarama people will fall asleep.  Just like everybody else.

Powell and Rice have done such great (by great I mean they've pooped their pants) jobs at State, I'd just as soon they didn't have a significant role going forward.

Palin because she's hawt, and let's face it, she'd help with mushy dimwits we are fighting over with Obamanation, and she's conservative enough to placate us rabid snakehandling right wing whackos.

Mitt would be OK, I guess.

If it's Huckabee or Lieberman, we might as well just duck-and-cover from the thermonuclear election massacre in November.

If it's Huckabee or Lieberman, I will officially not be voting in November.  I'm already not thrilled with McCain.  About the only thing he has going for him is that he's not Obama.

But if he picks an even more liberal running mate, I'll be hoping Obama wins, and that the Republicans wise up and find a real conservative to put up against him in 2012.

Ace.

Why you say?  Think of the great drama we'd have:  instead of Easter Egg Rolls on the White House Lawn, there would be White House Hobo Hunts throughout DC!  The stock of Valu-Rite would shoot up so high there would be no more economic problems!  Good prostitutes everywhere would have a presidential seal of approval...well, once again after the Clinton years...while skanky hoes would be shipped off to Gitmo (or the DNC).  And finally, the press conferences would be even better than those with Rumsfeld (love 'im or hate 'im he was awesome with the press).  Think of Ace "slicing through like an effing hammer" with Helen Thomas and "splitting atoms with his mind" to the astonishment of the elites!  Besides, wouldn't you just love to see an Ewok as Veep?!?

Besides, picking Ace would make not only Olberman's head explode but Matthews, Sullivan, Daily Kos and all the other douches out there...

Obama Makes History—in Many Ways,   Peter Kirsanow

"It's a great and historic moment. We have the  first black presidential nominee of a major party in the United States. As Jonah notes, however,  it's unfortunate that the nominee is a liberal with  little experience and poor judgment.     And it won't be the only first. In addition Obama will be the first presidential nominee known to have a terrorist as a friend and working associate [CORRECT: Jimmy Carter didn't become friends and work with Hamas until he was no longer a nominee.] the first presidential nominee to vote against a measure designed to prevent a form of infanticide [CORRECT: Jimmy Carter never held a position where he was allowed to vote.] the first  Commander-in-Chief nominee  to dismiss as an elitist a veteran who spent 5 1/2 years being tortured by the enemy  [CORRECT: Jimmy Carter dismissed John McCain who was a POW for 5 1/2 years, not tortured for 5 1/2 years.] the first presidential nominee to favor giving habeas corpus rights to foreign terrorists [INCORRECT: Jimmy Carter favored giving habeas corpus rights to foreign terrorists but he kept it secret at the time.] the first presidential nominee known to have a pastor who exclaimed "God damn America " [CORRECT: Jimmy Carter's Baptist pastor was not recorded so no one knows he frequently exclaimed "God damn America" when he went drinking and dancing.] the first presidential nominee to state that he will talk without precondition to the leaders of state sponsors of terrorism [CORRECT: Jimmy Carter talked to the leaders of state sponsors of terrorism without preconditions but he never stated he would.] the first presidential nominee to support giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants [INCORRECT: Jimmy Carter gave his driver's license to his gardener, Pedro, when Obama was only 8 years old.] the first presidential nominee to assert that he's embarrassed that his countrymen don't speak French or German [CORRECT: Jimmy Carter was embarrassed by his countrymen no matter how many languages they knew.] the first presidential nominee to compare the U.S. infrastructure unfavorably to that of a communist country [INCORRECT: When he was drunk, Jimmy Carter often unfavorably compared his native Georgia to the Soviet Union's state of Georgia. "God Damn that Cracker infrastructure", he'd empassionately exclaim to his Pastor.] the first presidential nominee to have a more extreme position on life issues than NARAL [CORRECT: NARAL did not exist when Jimmy Carter was a nominee.] Is whatever societal benefit that may be derived from electing the first black president worth having a president who has established the other firsts? Not a clue what will be important to him. And ya know, it doesn't thrill me to have no idea what "our" candidate will do.

I don't think its all that surprising to not know.  Let's face it, there are a lot of diverging elements in the Republican Party, and among independents that McCain has to try to appeal to either as himself or with his VP pick.  And all the ones who we see don't really seem to have that broad spectrum grab that can appeal to more than one of the diverging groups.  So its not surprising to not know which group McCain will grab for.

Robert Bork.

Oh, yeah, revenge is so, so sweet when it is decades ice cold.

Seriously, I will be so disappointed if it is Mitt.  Hoping for Sarah Palin.  Or Michael Palin.  Darn, no, you have to be a natural born citizen.  Ok, then Michael Palin for the Society of Putting Things On Top Of Other Things.

And, if not VP, the Sarah Palin for the Society of Putting Sarah Palin On Top Of Me.

97 "Please tell me you're kidding."

Article 2 section 1 states, "The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not lie an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves." OK, technically, the president and VP can be from the same state; but if they are, the electors in that state cannot vote for both of them. And I don't believe that there has ever been an administration where both president and VP were from the same state.

I would be awfully surprised and unwilling to vote if it's Suckabee. The man has backstabbed some good conservatives and generally demonstrated total untrustworthiness... and is frankly a glorified German Christian Democrat (the party, just for clarity's sake).

I'm pulling for Romney. I think he's the most obvious pick economically, and he's also a good transitional candidate to begin to draw in Jindal, Palin, Sanford, and the like for down the road. Consider- if McCain doesn't complete his term, or if he only chooses to go for one term, that opens up a bunch of possiblities for a future VP.

100 I like Tim Pawlenty, I like Kay Bailey Hutchinson, but I admit I'll be a little disappointed if it's not Romney.  I've come a long way with Mitt; I'm glad he's not the Presidential nominee (we'd be screwed), but I think he'd be a fabulous hatchet man and I think we need one to go up against Biden and to generally "go negative" for us.  I know he opens the McCain campaign to the "rich white guy" attack, but every candidate brings a plus/minus calculation, and I'll take his proven economic record and ability to help with some key states (NV, CO, maybe even MI) over the chance that he'll be attacked as a rich plutocrat.

Besides, I want to see Hugh Hewitt cream himself.

103 I've said from the time McCain was going to be the nominee that his VP would be Rudy.  Not my preferred choice but it brings to the ticket the perception of executive experience, a famous and celebrated name to the undecideds, a law and order guy who has socially liberal positions that attract the undecideds and a person who can definitely hold his own in a debate and getting the message out.

104 "I'm pulling for Romney. I think he's the most obvious pick economically, and he's also a good transitional candidate to begin to draw in Jindal, Palin, Sanford, and the like for down the road."

I don't see how you can make this claim.  It seems to me quite the opposite:  Romney, as VP, would freeze out Jindal, Palin, Sanford, et al. because none of them would have a chance to be our standard-bearer in 2012/2016.

I want an exciting conservative who can win next time, not a guy with iffy ideological credentials and serious losers' baggage.  Making Mitt VP anoints him as our candidate-in-waiting, and the only thing that would keep him out would be even worse:  the Huckabots taking over the party.

Forgot I was dealing with morons. Sorry about that.

She'd be an excellent and mavericky choice, a woman from the private sector, more qualified than Romney in the area of economics (she was on Romney's finance team). A real Washington outsider with impeccable credentials. She's also more than capable of cornholing Biden on national TV.

But we are talking about McCain, so who knows WTF he'll do.
