| Voters seeing through Captain Bullshit's™ bullshit...McCain now has a 9-point edge, 49 percent to 40 percent, over Obama on the critical question of who would be the best manager of the economy -- an issue nearly half of voters said was their top concern in the November 4 presidential election. That margin reversed Obama's 4-point edge last month on the economy over McCain, an Arizona senator and former Vietnam prisoner of war who has admitted a lack of economic expertise and shows far greater interest in foreign and military policy...My theory is the public is starting to realize that even with a Clintonesque gutting of the military, there's still not enough money left to pay to feed all the Unicorns Obama is promising unless there's some massive tax increases in store he's not talking about. People aren't completely stupid, they know the price of Purina UnicornChow™ and it ain't cheap. Comments1

Obama's handlers have to be scared shitless of the upcoming debates. The more we see of O! the more everyone understands that to call him a featherweight is elevating him in stature.

Comes down to his second banana. A good pick could reverse his fortunes. If I was him I'd pick Nunn, he's not the typical dumbass libtard.

Here's the thing, both men have spent their adult lives in the "public service" - McCain in the Navy, then politics; Obama as a "community organizer", law professor and politician. Sure Obama spent a few years at a law firm as an associate (trust me, not particularly good economic training (except maybe for the derivatives guys)), but neither has any particular chops in this area. The difference is, McCain is man enough to admit it, whereas Obama (and his psycho supporters/the MSM) assume that he will be great at it just by the power of the O. Anyway, the President doesn't pass the budget and he doesn't set Fed Policy - at best he can be a good chearleader and "do no harm" in terms of tax and regulatory policy (all of which are passed by Congress). The President's power to influence the economy in a positive way is very limited, but there are a number of ways he can screw it up. Ever since 1992 and "it's the economy, stupid" the electorate has been led to believe that the President has much more control over the economy then he really does. Clinton got lucky with a well-times boom/bubble and a Republican House that refused to let him screw it up too much (anyone remember the Asian and Mexican currency crises?). "mediocre at best" economic policies are still more palatable than "I'll tax you bastards into oblivion" economic policies. Edge: McCain

I'm guessing when Average Joe hears "economy" these days, he thinks of gas prices and the overall inflation they bring. The GOP has a winning issue with the "all of the above" oil policy, and that poll, I reckon, confirms it.

True. I think Barney Frank has already announced he would probably not vote for an Obama/Nunn ticket.
Not to mention Sam will be 70 next month. Sorta cancels out the McCain-is-old-as-Hell argument. The great thing about watching Obama find a VP is that there is no option for him that will help with many of his problems without exaggerating the other problems. Nunn will annoy the nutroots and make them want to stay home and hit the bong, even though he might give Obama some weight. But on the other hand, he might add too much weight and exaggerate Obama's image as a lightweight. Hillary probably won't take the job now that he's tanking and that rules out any other woman VP as well, since it will send the PUMAs in a rage. And he can't pick a devout lefty if he wants to appeal to the middle. All that leaves for him is a clown like Biden, a retard with a similar lack of experience like Kaine, or a pasty boring milktoast guy like Bayh. Tuesday afternoon Fox did an interview with an older gal billed as
"Obama economic advisor." The interviewer, "E.D." (sorry, I was
watching at the gym and just reading the captions) asked something
like, "Senator Obama has said the rich aren't paying their fair share
of taxes, and he wants to change that. The top one percent of
earners pay 40% of all income taxes. What's a fair amount that
they should pay?"
The Obama advisor wasn't about to respond directly, and tap-danced around it by saying something along the lines of, "That's not what the senator said. He's offered an across-the-board tax cut, even larger than the Bush tax cuts, so everyone will be paying less." Of course, if *everyone* pays lower taxes, how does the gubmint get the money to fund all the promised freebies? Surely not by (gasp!) deficit spending--since that's an action that the Dems constantly wail about Bush doing so much of. To "E.D."'s credit, she made a couple more attempts to get the Obie advisor to commit to saying "Yeah, we think the top 1% should pay, oh, 90% of all income taxes" or whatever, but the advisor danced around every attempt. Man, does anybody know if Fox offers transcripts of their programs? This stuff was pure gold. And should have shown to anyone who passed grade school how nonsensical Obie's economic platform is. Is there a Tivo device that can record five channels at a time? I want to capture forever the looks on the faces of anchors on ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN/MSNBC when the results come in and McCain is announced the winner. If such a device exists, does it have built-in protection against 5 heads exploding simultaneously on the channels it is recording? Posted by: Tushar at August 20, 2008 11:08 AM (ZqHH5) 23
There's a pretty decent editorial in the Boston Herald tearing Obama a nasty new one over the 'above my paygrade' statement. I hope Ace sees it: Posted by: adolfo_velasquez at August 20, 2008 11:10 AM (pf1ek) 24
Remember, historically the GOP needed to out-poll the dims by about 4-6 points in order to offset the voter fraud.
And frankly I am not sure that McCain can win, considering this year I think the republicans need to be up by about 8 points in order to offset the amount of cheating planned for the messiah. K Posted by: Kestrel at August 20, 2008 11:12 AM (bO3lW) 25
recreate '68!
Never understood this. Didn't the Democrats get a severe political drubbing because of the actions and riots by thousands of misguided leftist moron "youths" at their convention in 1968? Didn't they nominate a complete zero and lost to Nixon? Quite a strategy - recreate something that caused your party to get stomped the ballot box by Richard M. Nixon. Stupid like a fox. "Yeah, we think the top 1% should pay, oh,
90% of all income taxes" or whatever, but the advisor danced around
every attempt.
Idiot. All she had to say to deflect that question was that the top marginal income tax rate was over 90% during the 1950's and early 1960's. Posted by: Purple Avenger at August 20, 2008 11:20 AM (6L459) 27
What are the chances of having a debate *before* the conventions, seeing the Obamessiah drop to about 25-30% in the polls, and having enough super-d's switching sides to bring about a Hillary upset? I figure that's actually *worse* for us, so it could happen...

Dude, if Hillary pulls an upset, the Democrats lose. The O!bots won't pick her because she supported the Iraq war. And they'll be bitter at all of TEH RACISM!!!@, so they'll be rioting when they should be voting. It would be the ultimate consummation of Operation Chaos. Democrats at each others throats, pull numbers tanking, the American people realizing "what the hell were we thinking...", etc. It would be AWESOME. Hillary has higher negatives that O!, but not by much. However, she's not going to crack 50% if her husband couldn't do it. She's more polarizing than Clenis. A Hildawg upset would be the best possible outcome for the GOP - both up ticket and down. There isn't enough popcorn in the world to eat during that movie. GO HILDAWG! Not just his base. My perception is that he is just as much a hardcore left true believer as "the base".

It's all about the "O"! And that's not "O"bama. It's "O"il. McCain's on the same side as the people on domestic oil production and an "all of the above" energy policy. That's why he outpolled Obama on the economy. To voters right now, "the economy" means gas prices and inflation caused by high gas prices. If McCain is even in striking distance of Obama on "the economy" come October he will win this election going away.

The interesting question is what will Obama do now?
Like God, Obama is omnipresent, he is all things to all people, so while an ordinary politician might be able to move left or right in an effort to improve his numbers, Obama can't because he currently holds all positions. Any favoring of the left will weaken his support from the center and any favoring of the center or right will anger his base. Regardless, Obama's plan is for somebody else to come up with a plan. His idea is for somebody else to come up with an idea. Obama doesn't have plans or ideas to improve the country, not ones that will help him to be elected anyway. There is little chance that he will be able to present a platform plank that will sway voters to him. You would need an electron microscope to find any evidence of Obama's good character (unless you count his coming down from the cross to lead us into the promise land) so I wouldn't rule out vicious, lying attacks on McCain and on his supporters. Chief among them will be even more and ever more hysterical accusations of racism. (This may be an unintended consequence of this election; accusations of racism may become so prevalent that they lose their nuclear capability. Playing the race card may become no more effective than threatening to hold your breath until you pass out.) Of course, the sycophant media will crank it up a notch or ten but it appears that they have already shot their bolt, they have already been weighed and found wanting. They will continue to sacrifice their credibility to elevate the unworthy and to denigrate the worthy, but who will listen? There is the whiff of panic in the air and the end draws nigh. Buckle your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy ride. Posted by: WalrusRex at August 20, 2008 01:57 PM (DVVXZ) 34
I think one of the reasons for the McCain jump ins the polls is two things. Obama getting owned at the Saddleback debate and second the Russia Invasion of Georgia
has reinforced the notion to the public that this world in too dangerous to hand this country over to a lightweight. Posted by: GTB at August 20, 2008 03:43 PM (iInYK) 35
