| McCain: You Know What We Need To Do Something About? Global Warming.Apparently he's going to spend the next week or so advocating for action on climate change. In an implicit rebuke to the Bush administration, McCain will say in remarks prepared for delivery at the Vestas Wind Energy Training Facility in Portland, Oregon. "I will not shirk the mantle of leadership that the United States bears. I will not permit eight long years to pass without serious action on serious challenges." Referring to the Kyoto Protocols on greenhouse gas emissions the U.S. never signed, McCain added "I will not accept the same dead-end of failed diplomacy that claimed Kyoto." "We stand warned by serious and credible scientists across the world that time is short and the dangers are great," McCain will say. ""The most relevant question now is whether our own government is equal to the challenge."But wait, there's more! He's also using some of his limited resources on a TV ad dedicated to the subject. ![]() Comments1

Why McCain Must Lose In November (Part 1 of 36 of an ongoing series) Consider this: If McCain is elected, what the hell will stop him? What credibly will prevent these disasters from being enacted and how likely is it to be successful? I think we can be certain many Republicans who would be very easily led to oppose this coming from a Democrat will quickly fall in line with their own party leadership on these issues. With Obamessiah in the White House we'll have a loyal opposition. With Barry in charge I believe we can get 40 republicans to filibuster this sort of unpopular thing, which will take a tole on Obama - and indeed, running around pushing Kyoto and amnesty may not seem a great game plan for him that he won't even attempt all that. But with McCain it will be bipartisan. Do we have a better chance of stopping McCain or Barry? Posted by: Entropy at May 12, 2008 09:56 AM (m6c4H) 5
Republicans (distinct from conservatives) can and will fight Obama. Republicans maybe and might fight with themselves under McCain, no doubt tearing themselves apart to no good end whomever winds up winning. Posted by: Entropy at May 12, 2008 09:58 AM (m6c4H) 6
Can't we just get it over with an elect Hillary so we can get beck on track? I dond't want this RINO piece of trash representing my vote. I WILL NOT vote for him unless he has Romney on the Ticket. Hillary needs to be elected so the country can see what liberals do to to us and everybody does a collective "W T F?" And then a republican sweeps in to save the day. Wait a minute? wasn't that exactly how Regan came to be? But we wont. McCamnesty will get the presidency, and with his will to 'reach across the isle' we will all be fucked... Gimp style

Entropy, Not only bi-partisan, but further left. When the dems hold Congress but not the WH, they are free to agitate from the left on every issue, always claiming that the reps aren't doing (spending) enough, thereby moving the center farther and farther left. When the debate begins at a point which is center-left, and a RINO is the only person who can hold back a dem majority in Congress, positons which once seemed beyond the pale suddenly start to sound mainstream in the lefty press. Sort of like electing a black, half Muslim named Barak to the office of oh, say President. Posted by: rickinstl at May 12, 2008 10:04 AM (MvmeX) 9

Stop burning filthy coal for electricity to run your factories. Start knitting sweaters from the organically raised sheep in your backyard farms. And yet the Darwinist are fearful of the IDers when all along the Global Warmists have all but ruined faith in science. Science is officially back in the dark ages which reminds me of this sci-fi novel: Fallen Angels (1991) is a Prometheus Award-winning novel by science fiction authors Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Michael Flynn , The story features a future in which the environmentalist movement, joined with the religious right, has gained control of the earth's governments, imposing draconian luddite laws which, in an ironic effort to end global warming, bring about an even greater environmental catastrophe in the form of an ice age. A radical Green Party government of "Naderites" controls the United States government, and falsely blames the ice age on a society surviving in orbit. Science fiction fandom forms the core of a pro-technology underground in the United States, working in tandem with the Legion of Doom. Operating in a gray area, their colleagues and friends in the Society for Creative Anachronism work with the tacit support of the green-movement, in spite of considerable overlap between fandom and the SCA. Other technologists were accused by the government of pursuing "materialist science" were removed from their jobs and forced underground, where they were generally unable to continue their work. As glaciers rapidly advance south, Canada and the northern United States are all but destroyed.

Syn- That sounds promising; I'll have to check it out. Moving on... As someone who has tried to get people to hold their noses to vote for McCain, I find myself lining up with Hermit Dave's comment... and, like many others, feel like I'm getting to pick the noose by which I'm going to hang. My great hope is that by the time the general rolls around, the AGW hype will have worn off, and any Congressional push for Nouveau Kyoto will be half-hearted. But I'm not real optimistic about that. I did see something earlier that I wanted to respond to, though... with the notion of keeping 40 (R) senators- guys, I really have great doubts about that happening. Unless the voting public goes against their usual stance (everyone else in Congress sucks, but I like my guy), I'd be pleased if we only lost another 15 seats in the House and another 5 in the Senate. I can't believe this. I never thought I would be thinking that Obama winning would be a good thing. But that's what I'm thinking now. "Refraining from voting for McCain is not the same as voting and handing a mandate to Obama." It's not the same, no, but you have to face the fact that Obama and all his supporters (including every Drive-By in the MSM) will claim a mandate, and it will be easier for them all to get away with it if the margin is as large as it will be if Republicans sit on their hands. I'm still going to vote for the douchebag, if only because it would be fun to watch the Left go even more stark-raving bonkers if they lose again. Imagine that. Imagine Chris Matthews carving into his own chest with a letter opener "to let the pain out". Imagine Keith Olberman's wig literally flying off his head when MSNBC announces for McCain's victory sometime in in mid-January or so. Come on, those would be kind of fun to see, wouldn't they? To follow up my point above at 11:33 a.m., once the election is over, the revolt against McCain will go down the memory hole. The Official Story will be that the Obamessiah came and transformed everyone with His benevolence and great ideas. His prophecies will not be tainted by any qualifications like "he wouldn't have won if the Republicans didn't hate McCain so much." Posted by: Kensington at May 12, 2008 11:39 AM (kFwRi) 54
Kensington -- yeah, somehow I don't think the MSM will shed any tears if McCain is elected.
They win, no matter who is elected this year. They gave us the candidates they wanted the most. Nope, not voting for McCain. And this last bit of jack-assery puts me on the fence of voting for his opponent should it be close. A McCain presidency looks more and more like it would be the death knell for Conservatism in this country. As others here have already noted: I'd rather be in the position of enjoying the natural partisanship of your congress-critters in our fight against all these liberal talking points, than to have to fight against them in their support of this sack of crap we have as a nominee. Posted by: krakatoa at May 12, 2008 11:44 AM (/FUhT) 55
Entropy- In re-reading, I hear what you're saying about a loyal opposition. I just don't think we can maintain the numbers to make a filibuster gain footing. According to what I've read, you have to have 41 senators intend to filibuster, and 57 to stop it. http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=3169 Ah, hell, I don't want to have a meaningless fight about it... the point I was trying to make (and very poorly at that) is that I think we're more fucked in Congress than we are in the Presidency. I'm more afraid of 4 years of Jimmy Carter redux at the moment, but my distrust of McCain is catching up like Deion Sanders at a dead sprint while getting injected with amphetamines. tmi3rd Posted by: tmi3rd at May 12, 2008 11:47 AM (9bytU) 56

Most of the people here voting for McCain including the one's you mentioned above are not defending McCain on these positions. They have repeatedly stated their reasoning is that McCain's favorable conservative positions outweigh his failures especially when compared to his likely opponent. If you don't vote for McCain or don't vote at all you are helping elect Obama. That's your choice and you have your reasoning but make no mistake, you are helping elect Obama. Own it. I'll own a McCain election and the ridicule I'll get everytime he screws up knowing that we dodged a bullet with Obama. I recall having this same freaking discussion with people in 1992. I can disagree with plenty of what McCain is specifically advocating while still being relieved that we have a candidate who can talk with sincerity about wanting to deal with global energy developments from a position of national strength. Someone else put it better than I can, but I thought this was a good point: Whether the Republicans win or lose the White House this year, very little changes. We won't be happy with McCain, and the GOP might go a little squishier. It's already gotten a bit squishy under Bush, but we've gotten somewhat jaded about it, so a McCain presidency is unlikely to be all that different. He probably will be Bush 2.0. If McCain wins, it's neither a victory nor a disaster: it's pretty much more of the same. On the other hand, if the Dems lose, it's a catastrophe for them, an utter catastrophe, both internally and externally. If they lose, they'll be a shambles of a party. That's enough for me to vote McCain. Posted by: Kensington at May 12, 2008 12:05 PM (kFwRi) Posted by: bmac at May 12, 2008 12:05 PM (oRVu1) 70

V the K- I would submit to you that it remains to be seen whether Obama will make another run if he loses this time around. The Clintons will make it clear that they are not to be interfered with in 2012, and Obama is quite frankly the most formidable candidate they have to run at this point. Mark Warner or Phil Bredesen could probably run (on the Clinton template, and probably win), but who else do they have to throw up there? With Obamessiah in the White House we'll have a loyal opposition. With Barry in charge I believe we can get 40 republicans to filibuster this sort of unpopular thing, which will take a tole on Obama - and indeed, running around pushing Kyoto and amnesty may not seem a great game plan for him that he won't even attempt all that. STFU McCain Let the moronic spokesperson make the blather that's "meant to please". Unless McCain's degrees are in science, he should steer further from this topic than he stays from touching "the economy". Besides, no college degree is required to recognize two things right now: 1. The earth is currently cooling, not heating. Read the Farmer's Almanac instead of the NYT or Gore Post. 2. A few degrees warmer is much more desirable than a few degrees colder. Crops don't grow as long or as well in colder climates as in temperate or hot climates. Anyone who has grown up in the Arizona desert knows that all it takes is enough good WATER and fertile soil for bumper crops to emerge from an extremely hot climate. Even the Libyan agricultural horticulture experiments in the Sahara desert were highly successful given the underground water suppy and supplemented nutrients growing hydroponic food crops in desert sand. Now, try that in the Northern plains of the American and Eurasian Continents as continually cooling temperatures and Spring snow/ice storms stunt crop harvests. And we will all get by, somehow. Even under Hussein or McVain, there will still be warm, sunny days in summer, crisp mornings in autumn, there will still be comely maidens in tight shorts, there will be kittens and hockey playoffs and high school football ... and if that isn't enough ... If McCain wins, the bloodbath in the Democratic party will be a sight to behold. The Kos Kiddies, et alia will have a mega-meltdown, and the centrist DLC faction will be in a fight for their lives. By the way, they may not recognize it, but the Clinton's are now done in national politics. If Barry wins Hillary can't run in 2012. If McCain wins, she gets the blame from enraged Democratic primary voters, and doesn't stand a chance in 2012. The only problem I see with a 'loyal opposition' scenario mitigating an Obama Presidency is that I'm not convinced that the GOP members of Congress have enough fortitude in them to form an effective or willing opposition. Obama's positions have no effect on you when making a decision?
Yes, his positions mean I won't vote for him. The same holds true for my determination whether or not to vote for McCain. Personally, I loathe strategic voting. This is not to say that I have not done so in the past or that I will not do so in this election. However, I evaluate each candidate based on his/her own merits. Simply because I detest Obama more does not equate to an automatic vote for McCain. I have nothing against those who advocate for strategic voting. It is a reasonable, defensible position. But so is refusing to vote for a candidate whose positions one finds untenable, even if the result is a win for the opposing party. The vituperation being flung about is both childish and boring. There are far more important things to fight about, such as whether or not a large breasted Japanese woman could fit through that hole to harass her ex-boyfriend. Let's focus on the important things, my fellow morons. Posted by: alexthechick at May 12, 2008 12:50 PM (SHHaV) 96
And what are the chances McCain will reverse on this matter, or any other, and jump back to the right? Zilch, zero, nada. He is like the baskeball guard who can only go left. So if the long list of liberal actions has not been enough to give one pause about him demolishing the Party, think of the things he will do that we don't even know about yet. Boing, there goes McCain again, jumping over for free health care, etc. He will negotiate and agree with the left while pandering to the right. He has been all over the map on taxes and immigration and I don't buy any of it. Read my lips. Posted by: Robert at May 12, 2008 12:50 PM (Rb4Qc) 97
Obama's positions have no effect on you when making a decision? No. For all the shrieking about Obama he really isn't that much different than Hillary who isn't that much different than her husband. What's Obama going to do, get us all into a time machine and not go to war in Iraq? By January of 2009 we will be into our phased withdrawl from Iraq, one that has already been started and bought off on by Patraeus. Obama has already said, repeatedly, that his plan would at best have all the troops out of Iraq in 18 months. That's 2 years from now. And I doubt very much its all the troops no matter what he says now. He will get in office and announce that much to his surprise things are much different on the ground than he was led to believe by Bushitler and that we need to leave some troops behind to train the Iraqis, etc. Same thing McCain will do. I have no reason to believe that McCain will solve Iran any better than Bush has nor do I think he will do squat about Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, etc. Obama won't either. It's a wash. Yes, McCain loves the military. That doesn't mean he will use them wisely. Frankly, his judgement shows he probably won't. We know about global warming, illegals, taxes, and on and on. There is not much difference between McCain and Obama, just a matter of degrees. I don't like Obama. But he is not that far from McCain on most issues. If he wants my vote, he needs to be. As I said about Paul, if he was the candidate many would choose to sit out rather than support someone who didn't represent them. For me, the line is McCain unless he changes some of his positions. If he doesn't and many of us stay home, then McCain is to blame not us. Posted by: JackStraw at May 12, 2008 12:51 PM (t+mja) 98
What bothers me is how easily McCain talks about the "need" for government intervention. Doesn't surprise me in the least, given that he's been a federal employee for fifty years. This guy doesn't see gummint as the problem, he sees it as the solution--the only solution. His vitriol about Romney's "careerism?" Founded in McCain's internalized notion that Uncle Sam--not coiffed, successful "rich guys"--giveth, and Uncle Sam taketh away. When it comes, the donkey-punch is gonna be severe, amigos.

They've proved themselves to be big-spending, open-borders pork barrellers. That is an excellent point, but I don't know that it matters then who is president. Aren't we concerned about reducing our dependence on foreign oil? If we end up building more nuclear power plants using "global warming" as the excuse, doesn't it amount to the same thing? If we use the same power plants to power more electric and (in the further future) fuel-cell cars, doesn't that get us to a place we have to be, anyway? I don't believe in global warming, but if we want to pretend it is real for a second, it's also an excellent excuse to kill off the waste of ethanol subsidies. Texas will be reborn as a real republic,
No, amigo. Mexico will reclaim it after the insidious creep of multiculturalism has sufficiently decayed our foundation. The public schools will be right there to help things along, perpetuating historical ignorance of the forces that create wealth and freedom while fueling anti-Americanism, class envy and white guilt among its captive audience. How is this not win/win?
First of all, the easiest way for companies to avoid the carbon tax is to off-shore their industrial operations. Manufacturing is shut down here and sent to countries that haven't bought into or are exempt from this scheme. This is exactly what has happened in Europe. Second, read the bullet points... "U.N. negotiations; climate-change adaptation plans; implementation at the local level; comprehensive plans for infrastructure ecosystems; resource planning..." the McCain plan is a recipe for massive federal and even UN control of local development. There's no win anywhere in this plan. Posted by: V the K at May 12, 2008 01:25 PM (PLvLS) 112

In answer to previous questions, I'm almost a one-issue voter on the issue of "Build More Nuclear Power Plants." To me it is the number-one issue for long-term national security and energy planning.
I was a Thompson guy, but short of him, everything else is a compromise on the Right. There is a lot of disagreement and schism among people who truly want to see less government. Congress is weighted Left, and if there will be a groundswell against big government any time in the future, it will equally necessary no matter who is president. Hopefully stupid things like carbon-credit crushing of the economy can be compromised away in Congress, along with ditching ethanol subsidies. It's more important, then, to have Congresspeople with spines than who is president. And if the end result is a steady stream of new nuclear power plants being built, then I think we'll win. If I were to truly believe that McCain is more likely to build Nuclear Power Plants, then that is reason enough to say I think he'd be worth voting for.
