One of the few perks for Gitmo prisoners is getting to choose what to read from the camp library usually in their native languages:

Prisoners don't browse the shelves of this particular library; instead, they wait for a weekly visit by a cart of books prison officers think they might be interested in. If the prisoners see something they like they are allowed to check it out for 30 days.By far the most popular series is Harry Potter. But no sexy stuff which is a rule the prisoners made themselves. Well it seems to be the hot thing among up and coming D-level celebs and here are some tips on how you can get in on the whole trend. Well, the key question is what the Republicans plan on doing about it.
If they play by their old rules - even if they win a small majority in the Senate too - they'll face an Obama veto, back down with some minimally face saving "compromise" and call it a day.
If that is what happened, Obama and the National Socialists have won.

Does anyone get tired of one side always labeling the other as extreme, intolerant, racist, etc, etc? I feel like that's all they have and I've gotten to the point where I've tuned it all out. Have regular non political junkies reached that point yet? I mean, when are the Ds not hysterical about everything?

This is what I call the Fulghamization of Democrat politics. Robert Fulghum wrote the best-selling book All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Among the key life skills he cites are:
• Share everything.
• Play fair.
• Don't hit people.
• Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
Because they internalized this as the summit of Western civilizations accumulated wisdom, they think everybody else has, too. Thus they believe that they can shame their opponents by accusing them of being selfish, unfair, violent and hurtful.
In the Fulghamite Democrat Party, calling us "intolerant" and "extremist" is supposed to make us stop dead in our tracks, examine ourselves and our views and behavior, and turn into dutiful Progressives. And the sad thing is that it worked on some people, like David Frum and David Brooks and Christopher Buckley and (dare I say it?) Chucky Johnson.
But there are a couple of deep ironies. First is that their charges of intolerance and extremism reflect their own deep intolerance and extremism, born of their unshakable belief in their own rightness and truth.
Second is that in their crusade to make everyone live according to Fulghum's rules of the sandbox, they do not play fair, they don't care who they hurt, they're entirely too willing to use actual physical violence and they are completely unapologetic. And yet if you asked them, they would tell you that of course they live their lives according to Fulghum's rules, except when the evil Right-wingers force them to deviate from those rules against their will and only for the greater good.

This is why I'm having a hell of a time deciding on the whole "Mike Castle, stay or go" thing.
As I look at it, if we have the House, that's the key to at least stopping Black Narcissus from going forward. And frankly, in the Senate, I would rather have an Obamabot who's scared to death and running to the right as fast as they can go than a set-in RINO who's going to vote the same way as the Obamabot does.

No, we're talking about 4 years as this is the end of Sheriff Joe's term. This is likely the end of the line for Mike Castle. It's a finale to his career. I doubt he will run for reelection. Work on building a bench in Delaware rather than kneecapping a potential Republican majority with a confirmed nutcase. If Delaware is so amenable to a more conservative candidate, certainly one can be found who doesn't have all of the baggage, no?

There is also some truth to what Soona says about an October surprise. however, if it's letting the tax cuts be extended, I don't see thathappening. Now they can promise that they will do it after the election, but all we have to do is point out all those people who lied about their vote for health care, and we pretty much neutralize that promise.
If they pass the tax cut extension now, it won't make any difference to most people, because things will stay the same. Not too much passion in "Boy am I lucky! Nothing changed!"
Meanwhile, unemployment will still be low.

This is just more of the hate and misinformation permeating the left. She was 16 or 17 years old and not drunk, but it was a terrible accident.
But is doesn't matter, because the lie is much better than the truth. Michelle Obama hasn't killed anyone in a traffic accident, has probably never broken the law (even just driving over the speed limit, which I have done many times), or anything reprehensible. She is just a sour, unpleasant woman who frankly dresses in a strange way sometimes.

I have, indeed, voted Republican my whole life and am very socially conservative. However, it's disingenuous not to recognize that Mrs. Obama has a charm and appeal that transcends politics. She hasn't polarized moderates and independents like Palin, but had rather steered a gentler, mom-based non-ideological agenda. I find myself drawn to her despite my politics. Downside of relying purely on your hearing to guess how a completely made up word is spelled. Since it doesn't even have a real world origin you can't rely on taking a guess like you could with a real word you've heard but never actually needed to spell.

Hey, I am an equal opportunity snarker about fashion. Laura Bush had some loser outfits, principally because I think clothes aren't high on her priority list. Hillary Clinton could look good, but her high-water mark was during the 1992 campaign, when her hair was longer with a headband and she wore tailored clothes.
Michelle's clothes didn't look too bad during the campaign. Mostly she wore tasteful suits, but that was when they were trying to convince us that we were looking at Cliff and Claire Huxtable, with Rudi and Vanessa being towed along in their wake.
But then he got elected, and we haven't seen a one of those suits again. Now we see the shorts, the too-tight pants, the revealing tanktops (which Robin Givens in the Washington Post says she doesn't wear), the blue toenails, the hideous tablecloth prints, etc. etc.
The clothes are ugly and inappropriate. My theory is that either she or her stylist is getting a kickback from the designer.

I don't remember much but comparing it to late '70s punk, IMO it was a dark age. I'd cite the Police and David Bowie but both were starting to fall off by 1980. Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, New Order, Cocteau Twins and Siouxsie were putting out music but (1) it didn't get to the radio as of 1983 and (2) it wasn't as good as the fanboys claim.
What I remember in the years after disco / punk and before Blue Monday / new-wave: Eurythmics, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Michael Jackson (his later history makes people forget just how important he was then), Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark.
Prince's stuff from then holds up best. Oh, and Talking Heads. IMO, again.

I, too, am an ex-democrat. JFK was elected when I was in the 7th grade, and Bobbie was assassinated when I was an Air Force wife in West Berlin. My teenage and young adult years were filled with the Kennedys, and I admired her as First Lady very much.
So even though I have been a conservative since 1979, I still cherish those memories, and I resent the hell out of the Obamas co-opting Jackie Kennedy's image.
And one thing above all is this: Jackie Kennedy didn't bother us, harangue us, or embarrass us.

Democrats are portrayed as donkeys and Republicans as elephants. My analogy fell squarely within this tradition (as does Palin's self-comparison to an ungainly Mama Grizzy). Unfortunately, some have projected their own insensitivities, bringing to mind the criticisms leveled against certain Tea Party participants. I fear this attitude will alienate conservatives such as myself, and provide fodder for an effective campaign of grievance by a Mrs. Obama and her admirers.

The press was nice and deferential to Jackie Kennedy. She tried to class up the roguish Kennedy behavior.
Lady Byrd Johnson was also a very dignified lady, who was all about beautifying America. The press was reasonably nice to her, but people made fun of her accent (she was a Texan). Barry Goldwater hated LBJ but thought Lady Byrd was a great lady.
Pat Nixon was modestly ridiculed and mocked, at times rather nastily by the press. Even when she died, they were sorta mocking at the funeral coverage. She was from a modest background, and tough as nails, but it musta hurt deep down.
Betty Ford was rather well liked by the press, overall.
Rosalyn Carter was a soft spoken Southern Lady, and though occasionally mocked by the elites for her accent, they pretty much left her alone.
Nancy Reagan: Boy was the Press mean to her. She injected herself into certain situations, and was very defensive about "Ronnie", but they went after her as a way to get at Ronald Reagan.
Barbara Bush: Actually a very funny and witty woman, the press mocked her about her age, looks, etc. She was pretty tough about it, and it didn't get to her like the needling got to Nancy (Nancy and Bar didn't exactly like each other, either).
Hillary! Clinton: What to say about Hillary! ? Serial liar, power mad "co - President", over-rated political hack? I personally can't say enough bad things about her, but that's just me.
Laura Bush was in many ways similar to Rosalyn Carter, but the press whispered a lot of mean things about her. Just because they are mean.
Michelle Obama: Most mis-represented and over-rated First Lady in modern history. I wish somebody with some sense would dress here. Her big ego shows up every time she goes out alone in public. I can't wait for her to go out and reveal the power of this fully operational First Lady. I think her campaigining is going to be a taunt to get white people to criticize her, so they can whip out the racial grievance flag one more time.

I recommend the book The Dark Side of the Left: Illiberal Egalitarianism in America, by Richard Ellis. Ellis is a Left-leaning professor of politics at Willamette University of Oregon, so his Lefty bona fides are solid.
He was curious about why American political movements devoted to egalitarianism and equal rights—anti-slavery Abolitionists, feminists, the Students for a Democratic Society—almost invariably degraded into absolute dictatorships, prone to ostracizing dissenters and even to using violence in the name of their causes.

You want to know the first difference? "Purity Repubs" generally don't make a huge show of how they are all for equality of outcome.
The contradiction that Ellis was investigating is how people who are avowedly dedicated to equality among people and to democratic processes end up forming movements that are so anti-democratic that they not only use violence against their opponents but all too frequently end up murdering their internal dissenters.
And that's the second difference: the "Purity Repubs," in the parlance of modern child-rearing, use their words. They may denounce the squishes and RINOs, deny them contributions, even actively campaign against them -- but when was the last time you heard of any of them using violence to force their beliefs onto anybody?

A couple of weeks ago I decided to read on some of the more liberal blogs. These people do not self censor at all. They say some horrible things about other people and they say some horrific stuff to one another. They have lost all civility. They think nothing of advocating the demise of whomever is the flavor du jour on their blog. The conservative blogs just don't have those kind of commenter. Instead they have visitors from the lib blogs who want to frame the conservatives as being worse than they are and advocating some terrible stuff.

Well that's partly true. However if "History" is the way they want it to be, then any new research found documentation will alter that fact well then you cannot change that information ever. History is set in stone you know. Great example are the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition. The Crusades got the "living document" treatment in the past and have been rewritten to fit their view of Christianity = Bad. Attempts to correct the record are ignored. The Inquisition has this view and in the 90's the Vatican released a lot of the old documentation taken back there showing that the Spanish Inquisition was pretty benign and non-torturous when run by the Catholic Chuch and only when the monarchy took it over did it have anything sinister going on. But the Inquisition must always be a bit of historical proof that Christianity = Bad.
Seems that the new "living document" of History, based on trolls here, is to say that the nukes dropped on Japan were unnecessary and they were ready to surrender and the proof is something Ike said a decade after the fact.

Actually, that was a scheduled test. It would have been a good idea to postpone the test but I don't think there was anybody in the White House thinking about nuclear test schedules at that time. I don't know about the Soviet test/response. There's a lot of work that goes into setting up a nuclear test but I suppose you could just toss up a random nuke if you wanted to rattle a saber.

I would not like to hear folks starting to talk like the so-called "Progressives". I don't like this Administration's policies and initiatives, nor the events that have taken place in Congress, and I REALLY don't like the bureaucracy (the Mandarinate, as I like to refer to them), but I can think of no quicker way for us to lose credibility than to act and talk like the "Progressives". They've been at it longer and are better at it - the old business about "don't mud-wrestle with a pig". I don't know the politicians personally, so I can't say I would want to seem them injured or dead - out of office would do nicely.
I want to drive "Progressives" into a screaming, frothing fit by talking about issues instead of emotion, and winning on merits. I wrote about this a little while ago. Dick Morris had written that Democrats have to make the same choice as an ER surgeon: Do you try to save the limb, or abandon the limb and try to save the patient?
As Democrats brace for a November wave that threatens their control of the House, party leaders are preparing a brutal triage of their own members in hopes of saving enough seats to keep a slim grip on the majority. In the next two weeks, Democratic leaders will review new polls and other data that show whether vulnerable incumbents have a path to victory. If not, the party is poised to redirect money to concentrate on trying to protect up to two dozen lawmakers who appear to be in the strongest position to fend off their challengers.But how serious are the Democrats? In Morris' assessment, they pretty much have to give up trying to defend, say, their 30 most vulnerable seats. Those, Morris suggests, are simply gone. Their limited resources (they have money, more than us, but resources are always limited) should be directed instead to, say, saving the next most vulnerable 30 seats. If Democrats attempt too ambitious a firewall -- that is, they give up on only the ten or fifteen most vulnerable seats, but still attempt to maintain their majority -- they will end up diverting money to seats that can't be won, and, critically, diverting it away from those seats which could be won, with great effort. My fondest hope is that the Dems will go deeply into debt defending every seat, and face January, 2011 broke and trivialized in Congress.
Reality suggests that a mixture of voter apathy, lies, Osama Oboma's dwindling but still-strong influence, the media and ACORN will see them emerging from the elections still in control of Congress.

Depends on the website. For stealing things from Youtube, I run youtube-dl on my trusty NetBSD box.
There are also web pages that let you grab the video and download; you give it the URL of the page containing the video and it sucks out the video and gives you a button you can click to download it. Been a while since I used any of 'em, so I don't recall the name; you could always google "save streaming video" or somesuch.

In fairness, ace, the Repub establishment has one thing only in mind: it wants to keep the world safe for fatcat, do-nothing hack pols like those it has stuffed into Congress. Their major talking point is that they are registered as "Rs," not that they have any ideas worth paying attention to. It's the "Poppin' Fresh" party, more eager to make friends and not offend anyone than work for a better America.
This is fostered by pathetic cheerleaders like Hannity, who clings to the coattails of Newt, a failed lump of protoplasm.
Ultimately, there should be no room in the GOP for wastes of air and food like Mitch McConnell, whose sole goal is to stay in office and suck the public teat.
We can't broom all the moderates right now, of course, but we can at least take the most egregious of them off life support and make room for newcomers who understand smaller, less-expensive government and patriotism.

I keep shortcut links to my brower(s) cache on my desktop. If I watch a streamed video that I like, I can usually find a copy of it in the cache. Just assume that that very large file with the recent time is that video (since the cached file will probably not have a descriptive name or extension). You have to guess what the file format is - YouTube uses MP4.
Utorrent is a effective and tiny and full featured bittorrent program. Doesn't even need an installation.
