Why Bill Ayers Matters

As Allah snarked earlier, How come Bush's TANG records weren't similarly "tangential' as the left now claims of every character issue involving Barack Obama?

This may be obvious but it has to be said, and perhaps said repeatedly, until the left acknowledges it.

Either terrorism is a grave moral sin and unforgivable legal crime or it is not, guys. You cannot continue differentiating between "good terrorism" and "bad terrorism."

Would Obama be friendly with someone who actually bombed abortion clinics and defends that conduct? Not likely. But he is friendly with William Ayers, a leader of the radical Weather Underground, which in the 1970s carried out numerous bombings, including one inside the U.S. Capitol. (Though the last person who should object is Hillary Clinton, whose husband pardoned two Weather Underground members.)
Obama minimized his relationship by acknowledging only that he knows Ayers. But they have quite a bit more of a connection than that. He’s appeared on panels with Ayers, served on a foundation board with him and held a 1995 campaign event at the home of Ayers and his wife, fellow former terrorist Bernardine Dohrn. Ayers even gave money to one of his campaigns.
It’s not as though Ayers and Dohrn have denied or repudiated their crimes. After emerging from years in hiding, they escaped federal prosecution because of government misconduct in gathering evidence, but they don’t pretend they were innocent. In 2001, Ayers said, “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.” …
It’s hard to imagine he would be so indulgent if we learned that John McCain had a long association with a former Klansman who used to terrorize African-Americans. Obama’s conduct exposes a moral blind spot about these onetime terrorists, who get a pass because they a) fall on the left end of the spectrum and b) haven’t planted any bombs lately.
You can tell a lot about someone from his choice of friends. What this friendship reveals is that when it comes to practicing sound moral hygiene, Obama has work to do and no interest in doing it.

The left continues to insist that prior terrorism against the United States and her citizens, if part of a leftwing "movement," is all just a "youthful indiscretion" easily forgiven and better forgotten.

I don't agree, and neither do most Americans.

3 He is actually doing a good job avoiding and/or explaining away this one, just like with the Rev. What I hear from people who discuss the campaigns openly are all the same talking points that Obama is using: "just an acquaintance," "it happened when he was a child," "they were trying to stop the worse crime of the Viet Nam war," etc. His cover is blown, but he seems to think that if he pretends it isn't everything will go his way, and without the non-MSM I think it would have.

8 I should add that the polls showing Obastard up over McCain by 3 to 5 points smell bad, since they polled in one case only likely voters and in the other, just plain adults. Nevertheless, the MSM is so palpably in the tank for Obastard he could go on stage and shovel kittens into a woodchipper... and Chris Matthews would gush about the brilliant theater of it all, as a metaphor for the meanness of America that only Obama can cure. This may be hyperbolic, but I never thought that a nation as large and diverse as ours could abandon its senses and freedoms so quickly.

It's not just for how they shape his beliefs, it's for who he chooses as advisors.

Contra the left, a president isn't a king or a god, he's a man (or woman or Clinton) who needs to have people he can trust acting for him without him looking over their shoulders.

As I always said about Ronnie Raygun when they called him an idiot and a front for the people really running the country, "At least they're doing a good job."

Any president really needs good advisors who he can trust and who we can trust.

We're electing him and his advisors so it behooves us to pay attention to who might be in his inner circle.

As we know, the reason is that Ayers was investigated as a "criminal" and the FBI, in surveilling him broke with procedures in a number of ways (NOT waterboarding, sadly) and were unable to present a convictable case. Yeah-but 90% of the public has never heard of Bill Ayers (or Bernadine Dohrn) and of the 10% who have probably 40% will try to rationalize. I was driving home last night listening to a Knoxville station and they had a panel on discussing the Dem race. This came on and a couple of people called in to do just that-inlcluding one who described himself as a "Vietnam veteran" who claimed that Ayers and Dohrn never killed anyone except for their three comrades who blew themselves up (leaving aside those killed in the Brinks robbery after Ayers and Dohrn went underground).

The Dems know that the MSM will gladly cary their water-this goes nowhere unless we can find a way to force it into the public conciousness. Meanwhile expect to hear the words "McCain" and "Keating Five" repeated ad naseaum this fall.

Doesn't McCain still have a member (or former member) of the Mexican government as his "Hispanic Outreach Director"? A person actively working to subvert the sovereignty of the United States? How about his opposition to the wishes of 70%+ of the American people by pushing an illegal alien amnesty? And yet Republicans seem to be OK with that. I'm not. I don't see McCain as any model of moral rectitude and I don't see him as being better than the other two. Different, perhaps, but not a better choice for President.

1. I seem to recall seeing the leftist phrase: "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" many times.

Of course they make the distinction.

2. My son (WSO, F15E Strike Eagle) has pointed out to me that G. Bush's F102 had a fatality rate that was 3-4 times (at least) that of the F15. Apparently it had a nasty tendency to get unstable and flip when near the ground , both taking off and landing.

"Terrorist" isn't an objective designation, it is a term that states use to frame an individual's independent act of political violence against a state. It is a political term that is drawn up by the government to classify certain types of opposition to the state.

This is why we don't consider, for instance, Colombian counterinsurgents terrorists. But that will likely change, if it hasn't already. This is why the kurds in Iraq have pretty much been considered OK, but now, for the sake of Turkey, are shifting into the terrorist column. As Iraq stabilizes, more and more groups will be diverted into the terrorist column, even if they are currently considered "militias" or civic groups. I wouldn't be surprised if McCain or Hillary or Obama doesn't shift groups like the Minutemen into the terrorist column.

On the other hand, there are groups that were once considered terrorist groups, but which aren't now. The MEK from Iran bounces back and forth. The KLA got a makeover under Clinton. The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt has gotten some support from the US recently. Even Chalabi went from being a crooked thug to a good guy who turned out to be a crooked thug afterall.

Ayers is a free man and a US citizen. If the state does not consider a terrorist, then, for all intents and purposes, he isn't.

28 I have no complaint with most New Deal and some Great Society reforms. I think it rebounds to the credit of liberals that they pressed for Social Security, Medicare, and civil rights. I do not think it would be an insurmountable tragedy if I payed a few more thousand dollars in taxes or if America had a national health plan. But here's what I hold against liberals: they were absurdly tolerant of all the crimes of Communism and third world nationalists. Their attachment to democracy and capitalism is conditional and hedged. If the unemployment rises above a certain point or if America engages in a war that they disapprove of, they feel that they have a right, indeed a duty, to violently overthrow our government. I have no doubt that Obama considers Ayers excesses forgiveable and those of a hedge fund manager worthy of punishment. Liberals consider economic equality a greater good than freedom or God or patriotism. For these reasons I cannot vote for a liberal in time of war.

Think about that.

They are well-paid university professors. Ayers was an "education advisor" to Mayor Richard Daley.

This goes way beyond Obama, and beyond this election. Democrats have never had to acknowledge its extreme left wing, let alone distance themselves from it. And without the internet, this would have never taken hold.

It's going to be fun bypassing the MSM and bringing long-suppressed information out into mainstream discourse. The Dems probably would have been better served if they had to address this before now.

In this scenario anything could ultimately happen, including neither Clinton nor Obama becoming the eventual nominee.

For several centuries we have made mistakes of judgement in the maturation and growth of our country, but have always 'righted' ourselves as we re-adjust through, and from, the experiences...this is different! We have a man that has been mentored (and I believe groomed) by the extreme leftist views (and virtual actions) of radicals that espouse hatred of the 'establishment' and the 'imperialistic' America. How in the world can we ignore what is so clear....a lifetime of associations with people that; met with Communist North Vietnam representatives to strategize against America, listened for 20 years to an orator that stated "G-- D--- America", expressed a myriad of anti-establishment views/beliefs and have other associations with those of similar beliefs. The only thing different today is that those associates have matured and in lieu of overt armed resistance, the plan is for covert resistance from within! Is it as clear to you as it is to me of the commonalities here? What are the odds that these life's relationships could be an anomaly, or a coincidence? I think staggering! Please read, listen, analyze, apply common sense, research, investigate and vote for America's future.
