Science! Making Stem Cells From Regular Cells

It seems we may be able to have our cake and eat it too.

Two separate research teams, working independently, have developed techniques to transform regular adult cells into stem cells without embryo cloning or destruction.

"This work represents a tremendous scientific milestone—the biological equivalent of the Wright Brothers' first airplane," said Dr. Robert Lanza, chief science officer of Advanced Cell Technology, which has been trying to extract stem cells from cloned human embryos.
"It's a bit like learning how to turn lead into gold," said Lanza, while cautioning that the work is far from providing medical payoffs.
"It's a huge deal," agreed Rudolf Jaenisch, a prominent stem cell scientist at the Whitehead Institute in Cambridge, Mass. "You have the proof of principle that you can do it."
There is a catch. At this point, the technique requires disrupting the DNA of the skin cells, which creates the potential for developing cancer. So it would be unacceptable for the most touted use of embryonic cells: creating transplant tissue that in theory could be used to treat diseases like diabetes, Parkinson's, and spinal cord injury.
But the DNA disruption is just a byproduct of the technique, and experts said they believe it can be avoided.
… "People didn't know it would be this easy," Thomson said. "Thousands of labs in the United States can do this, basically tomorrow."

Of course this is the kind of stem cell research conservatives and gasp, George W. Bush will be able to support. It will be interesting to see how the Democrats react given the mileage they have gotten out of the stem cell issue in the past.

4 What the BDS'ers and media won't admit is that we have only ever been able to make anything from adult stem cells. There is not a single medical use discovered yet, other than vilifying Bush, for embryonic stem cells, but there are over 70 patented medical treatments created from adult stem cells.

5 It will probably have a hard time getting funding. I'm a Type I Diabetic, and I see this crap all the time, adult stem cells have actually shown more promise in creating a cure, but can't get a tenth of the funding as embrionic stem cell research.

7 What's really amazing is that the "progressives" are so damn sure that nothing is ever going to change, ever, that they can't see that, without Bush's ban on the creation of new stem cell lines, this research would never have gone forward.

11 Actually, while this is a good find, the idea that these cells can be used for treatment is probably not going to happen. They have to infect the cells with a virus that gives them the ability to become stem cells. From Science:
The retroviruses used to insert the genes could cause tumors in tissues grown from the cells. The crucial next step, everyone agrees, is to find a way to reprogram cells by switching on the genes rather than inserting new copies. The field is moving quickly toward that goal, says stem cell researcher Douglas Melton of Harvard University. "It is not hard to imagine a time when you could add small molecules that would tickle the same networks as these genes" and produce reprogrammed cells without genetic alterations, he says.

There is still quite a bit of work to be done that may or may not be possible without altering the cells in a way that will not promote cancer.

So, yes this research needs to be funded, and is heavily funded. It also tells us we need to understand how normal embryonic cells are made to help up take adult cells and turn them into totipotent cells. Everyone wants to be able to do this since the only way to get stem cells from an adult, at the moment is to take an adult cell and turn it back.

14 This actually is old, I reported on this last year. Researchers in Tufts University and in Japan independently proved it. The Tufts guys said this was going to make the embryonic stem cell argument obsolete.
