With the GOP votes in hand and a finite list of amendments to be offered by 11 Democratic and 11 Republican senators, Democratic sources said Reid is now determined to see whether the legislation can survive the amendment process intact. If it does, the Senate could vote on final passage of the bill by next Friday, Democratic sources said.
GOP sources tell FOX News that the new bill has enough support from Republicans for Reid to prevail on a procedural vote to get the bill to final passage.

Couldn't resist plagiarizing your excellent synopsis into an email that I've just sent Senators Bond and McCaskill. Don't know if it will do any good, but I'll post the text here in case anyone else wants to do the same.

Dear Senator (Whoever),
Regarding the latest Amnesty compromise, it's obvious that the cloture vote to end debate will be the "real" vote on the bill, because if debate is closed off, the bill is sure to pass. Then, what will happen is that the votes for the bill will be counted, and a few Senators who are afraid that their election prospects will be jeopardized by a "yes" vote, will be allowed to vote against the bill.

So, the amendments will all be blocked and those few that are passed will be immediately stripped out in conference. And then some are going to try fool the voters by voting yes to cloture (guaranteeing passage) but no on the actual bill, so they can claim they voted against it.

Well, it won't work. A vote for cloture is a vote for the bill itself, and amnesty opponents will never allow such a shoddy lie to be peddled to the public without challenge.

I can assure you that I will sooner vote for a space mutant than a willing participant in such a debacle.

In closing just let me relate (and I'm not at all sure how this is relevant, but somehow I think it is):

13 I stopped being a Republican in 05'. No more voting for the lesser of two evils, no more giving the self proclaimed conservative the benifit of the doubt, no more comprimising my position. Since this country isn't yet serious about fighting and killing the Islamists and their supporters, (like Bush said he would after 9/11), this has become the most important issue to me. The republicans deserve to go the way of the Whigs if they help pass this bill. At least with the Democrats I know what I'm getting. We need to elect real conservatives.

15 I just sent back a few Republican solicitations for money with notes about how they have the wrong address in as much as nobody by that name at that address is a Republican and how I would be very interested in their party should they oppose the Amnesty Bill.

I also let them know I will be forwarding them copies of all contributions I make this cycle to Republicans who primary pro-amnesty senators and even some Democrats (don't let me down Sen. Dorgan!) so they can keep track of how much they have lost.

It won't be much money and it won't matter but at least as I welcome our formerly illegal overlords, I'll have some cold satisfaction in having registered my opposition.

I am furious to discover my senators on the flipper list. I've sent them an email (yeah, like it'll do any good) telling them that I've already turned my back on the republican party, but was prepared to vote for them as individuals as they've proven their seriousness about national security. However, should they vote for cloture or for the bill itself, they'll not be getting my vote.

So... any good third parties around? And ix-nay on the ibertarians-lay. The repubs lost my vote over national security. I'm not about to support a party that doesn't even pretend to be concerned about it.

Believe me you don't want to endure the unctuous recorded moron who answers the hotline - and he can be easily avoided! Let "Mr. Caring" get a few words in and then press "*". You will be told "that it is not a valid response, please retry". Then press "1" and you will be connected to your Senator #1 with having to listen to the brainwashing. Then call back, do the "*" thing, but then press "2". TA-DAAA... you get your other Senator! You didn't really want to ruin your evening by flying into a rage, did you?

PS. My Senators were automatically selected by the system. If you have to enter your area code, you may want to try entering that after the "*", and then if there is another speil, try the "*" + 1 / 2 approach again.

I've heard that emails don't work as well as telephone calls, faxes, or snail mail. That makes sense to me because it's much easier to ignore emails. You can machine sort them on keywords and bulk delete them. Phone calls tie up their office phone systems, faxes and letters pile up. It's harder to get other office business done with calls to field/ignore, faxes to sort, and piles of letters to open/sort.

I hate to say this and risk a certain level of acrimony for stating so, but I think the only thing that can prevent such an argle bargle of claptrap of nonsense garden variety tyrannical bug excrement of legislation from being enacted is another significant terrorist attack.

Now, I'm not saying that Washington DC should be the target of an attack...I mean, if Washington were destroyed, how would our new work force be able to qualify for Green Cards. I think it speaks very poorly for the health of the Republic for the national capital region to have become one of the most affluent in terms of income and real estate value. This must be righted.

I told her that if the senator holds the line , that it would be remembered. Told Isaakson's staffer the same thing. Both staffers said that they would pass the message to the senators.
