UPDATE: WaPo Also Taken In By Fake Memo, It Seems
Larry Johnson Claims: Theater-Wide Supply Problems Mean Our Troops In Iraq Will Go Hungry

Update! Story debunked by numerous sources all sharing the same IP address!

...

Larry Johnson, famous "intelligence agent," has the Super-Duper Scoop:

Some brave soul in the U.S. military sent Pat Lang a memo issued Monday that shows the U.S. ability to support its troops is collapsing and very vulnerable to disruption.

The memo states:

Due to a theater-wide delay in food delivery, menu selections will be limited for the near future. While every effort will be made to provide balanced meals, it may not be possible to offer the dishes you are used to seeing at each meal. Fresh fruits and salad bar items will also be severely limited or unavailable.

...

We don't have enough convoys to give our troops three hot meals a day. We want them to step up the patrolling. We want them to search 24-7 for missing soldiers. But, by God, they don't deserve three hot meals a day.

Excuse my rudeness, but that is fucked up. Way to go General Petraeus.

He ads this update:

UPDATE: I've received a note from a journalist buddy who say's that the US military Public Affairs Officer in Baghdad says this is a phony document. We'll see. I sure hope that is the case. But it does not undermine the basic point of the vulnerability of the U.S. supply line.

Ah. His basic point wasn't that it was "fucked up" that our boys weren't getting their three-square. It turns out, now that the document is revealed as a fraud, his basic point was about the general vulnerability of supply lines and that such supply lines could, hypothetically, be disrupted.

I wonder how on earth this scary-smart "intelligence agent" ever could have been taken in by a fraudulent document. I mean, after all, the thing sure looks real. I mean, hey. It's got an eagle on it!

Surely any document with an eagle on it must be genuine.

Bush Lied! Bush Lied! Ca-Caw! Ca-Caw!

Thanks to... Seixon, posting from beyond the blog-grave, a restless ghost still seeking vengeance on his one-time tormenter.

That Eagle Of Genuineness: I've searched throughout all Google images for "eagle" and I have not seen that image. So am I to conclude this is part of the standard document-dressing for the US army in Iraq, and yet it's never before appeared on the Internet?

If you blow up the image to 200%... well, I can't vouch for this, because the image gets too grainy at that size.

But it really doesn't look like a drawing. What it looks like to me is a picture of a hummel-type desk-statue of an eagle and flag.

Found The Image: Here. As part of the masthead for "CERT Los Angeles," which seems to be volunteer disaster-preparedness training thing.

It's not from a figurine site, but at this higher resolution, it does look even more like a figurine. I guess I got lucky as my second figurine search ("American Eagle figure") wound up finding it:

Eagle_on_American_Flag_Logo.gif

So, not a single instance of this image came up in any connection to a US military document.

It was, however, discoverable via a Google search for eagle images.

However, I can certainly see why genius super-spy Larry Johnson was taken in by the forgery.

It had an eagle on it! And furthermore -- an eagle with its talons around an American flag!

Gold standard, baby. Pretty much self-authenticating right there.

If anyone wants to keep searching for Eagle American Flag Figurine and variations on such, please, go ahead. I'd like to see precisely what knicknack and hummel vendor the US military is taking its eagle images from.

But I can't keep searching right now. I've looked at eight billion eagles already.

How The Retarded Forger Found The Image: It's on the very first page of a Google Image search for "Eagle American flag." Second row.

Got It: The little sucker was hiding from me.

But I found it:

lenox_china_kings_of_the_sky_no_box_P0000014682S0008T2.jpg

It's a Lenox China "Defender of Freedom" eagle figurine (scan down, click camera-icon for picture of the "Defender of Freedom."

Alas... While the "document" may be fake, it may be accurate. That is, a faked pdf that nevertheless accurately conveys the information in a real memo.

This WaPo story quotes from the "memo," which would fill me with joy that the WaPo's been punked, except for the fact than an embassy official in Iraq says that convoys have been backed up.

But does he really? Or is he simply accepting the Post reporter's "memo" as accurate and speculating as to what it would mean, if true? He never confirms the memo, note:

Instead of rice pilaf with turkey or fish -- Monday night's main entree, according to embassy spokesman Dan Sreebny, who said he topped it off with two cookies -- the staff would have to make do with military Meals Ready to Eat, freeze-dried concoctions with prescribed amounts of starch and protein, capable of withstanding parachute drops and remaining edible for three years after packaging."We've run out of some things," Sreebny said. "I miss my yogurt in the morning and my fresh-cut melon."

...

Sreebny, who said on Tuesday that the last supply trucks arrived in Baghdad two weeks prior, attributed the delays to paperwork problems on the border, traffic jams and "security issues." He said the embassy stocks three weeks of non-perishable food for use in the event of emergency, so no one was yet in danger of MREs.

...

In any case, American personnel assigned to the embassy are promised American food -- although Kuwaiti bottled water is acceptable.

"This has happened before, in terms of convoys," Sreebny said, although "this one may be a little bit longer than in the past. Then the food comes and we all gorge ourselves on apples and oranges and bananas again."

I dunno-- that document is fake. The military, I'm pretty sure, does not use pictures of Lenox China "Defender of Freedom" hummel eagles in its mastheads. And I sort of think it's a fairly major coincidence that this exact image is on the first page of results for a Google Image search of "American Eagle flag."

Surely the military has its own emblems and logos by this late date?

So I think that the document itself is fake-- and someone is attempting to gin up a rather minor convoy delay into something that threatens the feeding of our troops.

The Post article does in fact confirm there is a delay, but not that there is a theater-wide food shortage, nor that anyone's getting fed MRE's in base chow-houses. (The "memo" itself doesn't say this is happening, only that it might.)

It seems we either have a case here of fake but accurate, for real this time, or fake and also inaccurate, if the memo is entirely fake and forged to create the false impression of a serious delay in supply whereas none yet has occurred.

More... As commenters and Charles Johnson point out, while the document bears a date of "5/21/07" (which isn't the typical format for the date on official memos, I'm told), the pdf actually was created two days after the purported date:

Author: khanp

Created: 5/23/07 7:15:03 AM
Modified: 5/23/07 7:15:16 AM

Application: Acrobat PDFMaker 8.0 for Word

There are several possibilities here:

1) The PDF is completely genuine. This strikes me as so unlikely as to be hardly worth mentioning, but I'll toss ito out there as a possibility. In this scenario, the official issuing the internal memo could not find the proper eagle logo to put on the document, and so had to resort to a Google Image search for "Eagle American flag" to find a properly-patriotic and military-seeming logo. He came up with, it seems, a picture of a Lenox China "Defender of Freedom" eagle hummel figurine as the best possible method of branding his document as an official US memorandum.

2) The PDF is fake, but it is an accurate recaptiluation of the information found in the real memo, minus, presumably, the usage of a Lenox China "Defender of Freedom" hummel figurine as an official US military logo. Why this person did not merely fax or email the real memo is something of a mystery. Why take the genuine article and create a borderline-retarded forgery of it?

3) The PDF is fake, but the WaPo story is based on a real memo. The left is now circulating a crude forgery created by one of their goofier members in an effort to show they've got "sources." In this scenrio, of course, the left blogosphere's Fox Mulder-like "I Want To Believe" credultiy is underscored -- they'll believe anything so long as it casts Bush and the Iraq War in a bad light -- but the basics of the story are actually pretty much accurate.

4) The PDF is fake, and the WaPo relied on the exact same shoddy forgery for its story. This is a lot worse, of course -- if the WaPo is taken in by ridiculous shams like this, what precisely is the value of all this "painstaking confirmation and multiple-layers of rigourous editorial oversight" we've heard so very much about? In this scenario, a fairly routine delay of a convey has been trumped up into a theater-wide shortage of food by a comically amateurish forger who got his agenda right smack into Section A of the vaunted Washington Post. Slapdash, juvenile forgers: 1, the Washington Post's intitutional integrity and "multiple layers of rigourous editorial oversight," nil.

Which is it? Unless it's Possibility 1 -- what I'd like to call the "Retard Scenario" -- then either the left and/or the liberal MSM have a fairly major embarassment on their hands.

I've emailed the WaPo's reporter to inquire if it was this ridiculous hoax she relied upon in writing her story, or if she has a more plausible, less hummel-figurine-filled memo in her possession.

But I don't expect a reply.

More... I'll leave it to the expertise of Charles Johnson as to the exact implications of this:

Also notice that the PDF document is not a scan of a printed original, its editable text captured directly from Word. So this PDF file was created from a Microsoft Word document, two days after the date on the so-called memo.

Did the convoy delays also deplete the US military's stock of document-scanners, thus requiring the creation of this "original memo" in Microsoft Word two days after its puported date?

1 Pshaw.  You've only succeeded in proving one thing.  You know what it means when you disagree with Larry Johnson, sweetcakes.

2 Whether or not these documents are authentic enough is not relevent.  What is importrant is that they are accurate.

3 You Bushies are so full of it, always attacking anyone who criticizes your crusade in Iraq. There's NO WAY that is a fake PDF! What a bunch of dumbasses!

4 Too bad DFACs don't serve MREs.  You know, they kind of come from your Unit Supply.  But hey, facts aren't important to those who would take any chance they could to swipe at BushMcHalliburton.

5 To whatever extent this may be true I think probably the finger of blame ought to go toward, oh, I don't know... congress for delaying the funding so long playing political games?

But it sounds like a buncha hogwash to me, I know the military is run like crap sometimes but this sounds just wrong to me.

It takes at least 50 pieces of correspondance before there is ever a definative statement like that made.  There should be at least 50 other documents that hem and haw before insinuating there is a supply problem.

There is NEVER a piece of correspondence that is that succinct.  Never.

7 Well I'm exaggerating, but larry johnsons a fucking twit, so I took it to an extreme.

8 Chris, and to others... let us look at the memo line by line... I am going off the Army standard, since that is the one I am most familiar with.  If any other veteran of another branch can claim that their branch has memos done this way, please step forward.

1.  Can someone please tell me what the hell U.S. Mission Iraq is?  Its OIF- and a numeral.  I believe we are on 4 now.

2.  The military doesn't date items like this.  Instead of  5-21-2007, it would be 21 May 2007.

3.  The To: line always precedes the Subject:  line.  And there is always a From: line right after the To: line.

4.  No one in the military is referred to as an Employee.  They are referred to as SMs (Service Members).

5.  The memos points are not numbered, but hey, at least the got the block paragraph thing right.

Then we have the signature block on the wrong side and a few other issues that point that this is definately not a memo from the Army.  It is also not a DoD memo.  While the DoD standard and Army standard do differ some, the also have many similarities, such as the date format for one example.

Lastly, I have no f'n clue what the hell kind of rank a MGT/S or MGT/E is.  It certainly isn't a military rank, and all the DoD civilians are GS- and a number.

9 I was thinking that MGT/S Muench was otafin tutuola's partner.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at May 26, 2007 04:05 PM (QTv8u)

10 as for formating, yeah the formatting is obvious, but I couldn't say other than "it looks wrong" cuz I was never a fan of my navmc 1070 to begin with.

11

And Ace,

I'm not getting the images, might just be me.

12 I need to correct my previous post, we are on OIF-5, not 4.

At Wickedpinto...

I was thinking that MGT/S Muench was otafin tutuola's partner.

That went over my head.

Also, the document properties in Adobe give the author as "kahnp" and the creation date as 5/23/07 at 7:15 am--two days after the ostensible date it bears.

And don't you think they'd avoid cutting off the tail of the "q" in U.S. Mission Iraq if this is some sort of letterhead?

I hereby pronounce this the worst forgery since John Adam.

15 Just FYI, CERT = Community Emergency Response Team. It's a type of training that civilians can take, and it trains you to help out in case of Big Emergencies like earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.

You get a nifty green CERT bag and a helmet, gloves, goggles, face mask, first-aid supplies, and you get to see films of firefighters screwing up in fatal ways.

They teach basic first aid in traumatic situations, like how to recognize shock, how to stop bleeding, how to splint broken limbs, how to make improvised stretchers, how to set up a temporary morgue, and how to triage the wounded. And how to shut of gas lines, if necessary.

I took the class at the local fire station. When the Big One hits, I'm supposed to go to the fire station and get instructions.

21 Doesn't matter, fake but with a kernel of accuratish information, is more fake than it is accurate.  And delays happen all the time.  Quick story, there are a lot of bivouacs that are all over the place near "camp wilson" and there have been times when we had to offer up support vehicles to supply them.   That isn't a breakdown of logistics, it's a diverse use of equipment.  and Wilson is only about 20 miles from the mainbase.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at May 26, 2007 04:41 PM (QTv8u)

22 Another thing...  Anytime the DoD, Army, Navy, Airforce, Marine Corps, or Coast Gaurd put out a memo, they use their official seal.   Just to bump Ace's point on the whole image thing.

Other images can be added, like regimental affiliation, unit insignia, or others, but the official seal of the branch is always present.

You know, there's a lot of guys who fought in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam that are either: 1) getting a good laugh at this "memo" or 2) rolling over in their graves at the softness of our tropps espoused by this "memo"

"it may not be possible to offer the dishes you are used to seeing at each meal. Fresh fruits and salad bar items will also be severely limited or unavailable."

K-rations, MREs, and mud managed to win WWII, and keep the Chi-coms at bay in Korea and Viet Nam (the politicians caused the "redeployment" of troops in the latter).  My Dad and father-in-law would have loved some fresh fruit and veggies as they went from North Africa, to Sicily and up Italy.

Even as a fake, this is a joke.

This fake but accurate stuff pisses me off.  It is proof of a preconcieved opinion, validated by something that is fake, and then once called on their deliberate ignorance any small item that CAN, but doesn't support the initial desire of the reporter to make the statement that is only validated by a false reference is treated with doctrinal absolutism.

"Gay's infest liberal hierarchy so says specialy work product memo!"

The memo's fake dude,

"Barney frank is gay, Jim McGreevey is gay, the memo might be comepletely fake, but the supporting information for that fake memo is very real!"

FUCKING PLEASE!  That sort of logical progression can only be taught in university.

Mike,

Something else I just thought about,

Bitching about the quality of the meals that the servicemembers might be eating as though it is a warcrime, should be treated as a warcrime, seeing as how the predominent commissary contractor in Iraq is KBR.

32 Note that WaPo is quoting an embassy official.  If you think for one second that the troops are getting the same quality food as an embassy official...I have some real estate I can sell you.

Hell, the troops don't get the same quality food away from the main base.  The quality of food and variety of food was much greater at Victory Base than it was at DFACs at bases just 20 miles down the road.

But it is unlikey that you will hear troops bitch about it.  Whiney-ass State Department officials, sure...troops, not so much.  Unless they are Air Force .

Another thing that just struck me, cuz I saw the abbreviation "mps" somewhere else in the last few moments.

The marines and the army both have prepositioned shipping platforms, there is absolutely no concern that our troops are gonna start starving for more than 3 months I think is the inclusionary breakdown.

So, theres a supply problem from KBR?  move in the shipping, and you get a months grub, guns and gauze at no additional cost.

59 Did your MRE's really come with little midgets to take away the china?

60 and what was your wine ration?

Posted by: Wickedpinto at May 26, 2007 06:13 PM (QTv8u)

61 I have no f'n clue what the hell kind of rank a MGT/S or MGT/E is.

Those aren't ranks.  I would assume that 'MGT' is short for 'management.' However it's obvious that 'S' and 'E' are the first initials of S. Muensch and E. Butler.

What is obvious, however, is that this is definitely not a military correspondence--not that I think that anyone was trying to copy military format. (Recall the Bush-AWOL documents--patently bogus not only due to the fact that someone had composed them using Microsoft Word, but because of the author's laughably poor attempt to imitate the strict format of military letters.)

62 Oh, you are killing me Wickedpinto...  But seriously, the Air Force, just like any other branch wouldn't have midgets.  The would have "person, small".

65 Here's Larry's response to a comment at his blog:

You complete bonehead. US Embassy authorities confirmed its authenticity on Thursday. You are a certifiable idiot. Go take up space where intelligence is not a requirement to participate.

Hmmm. The memo was on Iraqslogger on Wednesday, the same day that Karen DeYoung at WaPo first wrote about it.... She supposedly confirmed the "delay" with people in Iraq, although she could have just quote-shopped them to fit with what she was writing. There's nothing in her story to say she confirmed the authenticity of the memo.

67 i see that, Seixon--so what's the deal?  Larry admits it's fake in an update to the post, but now he's defending it in the comments?<blockquote>UPDATE:  I've received a note from a journalist buddy who say's that the US military Public Affairs Officer in Baghdad says this is a phony document. </blockquote>

68 Can't add much to this discussion that hasn't already been said, although I spent 15 years as an Air Force personnel supervisor at various duty locations in CONUS,  Europe, and Saudi Arabia (Khobar Towers, Dhahran, 1994-95), and I never saw anything like this.

I will add, in case it hasn't already been brought up, that the name listed as author of the pdf document, "khanp," looks very, shall we say, Muslim to me (i.e., actual name would be presumably "P. Khan").  I know this because I regularly advise graduate students from Southwest Asia at a large Midwestern university.  I suspect "Mr. Khan" is Muslim  and may well be of either Indian or Pakistani heritage.

If you don't believe me, just do a quick search through Google Images using the word "Khan."  Lots of folks with traditional Arabic names will immediately pop up.  Is it profiling?  I guess so, but the question really needs to be asked, doesn't it?

Nobody liked the pork patties?  Loved those things with the applesauce packet.

Thing I couldn't stomach was the cheese in the bag.  I saw guys open their mouths and squeeze that goop down their throat.  That crap was the paste of death.

Is Larry Johnson like that "hard as nails, CIA kill squad guy" Michael Scheuer that JimBob was ejaculating over, only dumber?

Posted by: cranky at May 26, 2007 06:37 PM (Xj2Ev)

71

MarkJ,

interesting point, but what about the person, small?

Posted by: Wickedpinto at May 26, 2007 06:38 PM (QTv8u)

72

only dumber?

The technical term is "retarded."

And I loved the Cheese especially on those rare ocassions (how do you spell that fucking word?) when we had MRE bread, which I think is the next best thing to warm sauerdough.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at May 26, 2007 06:40 PM (QTv8u)

73 My favorite part of the MRE was the crackers and the dried peaches.  Forget adding water - ate them right out of the bag like a candy bar.

No, was never in the military.  Was in both HS and college ROTC - midshipman 3rd when I realized being a military brat my entire life was enough.

Posted by: Slublog at May 26, 2007 06:46 PM (hrmYd)

74

Wicked, I'm not up to speed on the lastest technical orders so I've missed the transistion from the use of "dumber" to "retarded".  Guess that means I'll have to enter Super High Instensity Training mode.

Cheese made me gag.  Dude, check out Michael's war dog memorial post.  Poochies and Marines -- you'd love it.  Collar on the dog has Always on one side and Faithful on the other.

Posted by: cranky at May 26, 2007 06:46 PM (Xj2Ev)

75

Peaches?  Now that would rock with or without the water.

Had the dried strawberries but never the peaches.

Posted by: cranky at May 26, 2007 06:48 PM (Xj2Ev)

76 Oh, the peaches were awesome.

And I loved the ham.  Used to take it out and put it on the crackers with just a little cheese.  Not too much - that cheese could constipate an elephant.

Posted by: Slublog at May 26, 2007 06:50 PM (hrmYd)

77

Don't recall ever having dried peaches, I was in when a lot of shit on the menu was getting phased out, and the good stuff was coming in.  But the Crackers, is EXACTLY why the MRE bread was awesome, I would hoard that shit, and after good excercise, or an acknowledgement from a grunt I was in training with, I would treat myself with an honest to goodness sammich with bread.  Even if it was 4 fingers of death (with 2 extra bottles of tobasco) sammich.

An honest to goodness sammich was such a treat.  Actually now that I mention that, I thought of something else, the only thing that I ever used my bayonet for, Other than cutting off the tip of my left index finger by using "poor judgement" as my SNCOIC put it, was to cut down tree's, 4 inches and less in diameter (and let me tell you, if your NCOIC or anyone higher catches you using your weapon, bayonnet attached as an axe during a simple "comm" excercise, they tend to get pissed, WHOOSH!) and to cut my mre bread.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at May 26, 2007 06:54 PM (QTv8u)

80 No one has mentioned Ranger Pudding yet?

1.  Open MRE Coco Mix.

2.  Add Cream and Sugar from the accessory packet (Coffee mix added: Optional, but only for the most hardcore).

3.  Stir in water until a pudding like consistency is achieved.

4.

5. Profit.

I also heard rumors of creating a strawberry shortcake while using the bread, dehydrated strawberries, and some other ingredients.  Never had a MRE with the strawberries so I never got to try it.

Larry Johnson is an idiot of the first order...

 http://www.slate.com/id/1008336

"Judging from news reports and the portrayal of villains in our popular entertainment, Americans are bedeviled by fantasies about terrorism. They seem to believe that terrorism is the greatest threat to the United States and that it is becoming more widespread and lethal. They are likely to think that the United States is the most popular target of terrorists. And they almost certainly have the impression that extremist Islamic groups cause most terrorism.

"None of these beliefs are based in fact. ... While terrorism is not vanquished, in a world where thousands of nuclear warheads are still aimed across the continents, terrorism is not the biggest security challenge confronting the United States, and it should not be portrayed that way."

--Larry C. Johnson, "The Declining Terrorist Threat," New York Times, July 10, 2001. Johnson, a former CIA officer, was deputy director of the U.S. State Department's Office of Counterterrorism from 1989 to 1993.

84 It seems to me that someone shopped this phony document to Iraqslogger, Patrick Lang, and perhaps a few others on Wednesday the 23rd. Iraqslogger and Larry Johnson then post it that same day (Lang and Johnson are VIPS buddies), on the 23rd. Karen DeYoung of the WaPo writes an article about it on the 23rd. Then DeYoung writes another article on the 24th recycling the information, and gets some quotes from army personnel in Iraq that, from the looks of it, only seems to confirm that small delays happen from time to time, but "meshes" well with the phony memo.

Then Larry says that DeYoung's article is basically a confirmation of the memo's authenticity from US Embassy authorities... although DeYoung never states anywhere in the article that she had someone authenticate the document. Unless she did in the article on the 23rd, that it behind the subscription wall at the WaPo...

I think we're basically dealing with a total fake that DeYoung tried to pass off as genuine and quote-shopped some guys in Iraq to make it seem authenticated.

Yawn.  The only people who'd complain about the chow hall selections would be pogues.  Us grunts was happy we wasn't eatin' these motherfuckin' MRE's.

And a lot of the ones they've come out with in the last couple of years are really good.  Ham Slice is thankfully gone, as is Pork Chow Mein.  The new Beef Patty (it's a hamburger) is actually really good, and the Meat Loaf doesn't taste like shit anymore.

Do not, repeat do not, eat the Omelette.

103 The military doesn't date items like this. Instead of 5-21-2007, it would be 21 May 2007.

Yeah, I know people who've been out of the service for 35 years who still write their dates that way as a conditioned reflex.

But I know the racism others have against the omelettes, only other person I knew who liked the omelette was a "friend" of sorts (he actually had a sort of man crush on me, we were the same age, from the same area, and both more than a little crazy, and while I do have an ego about my untapped intelligence, he was actually MUCH smarter than I was/am but he fucking WANTED to be an 04, why does someone with a 98 afqt WANT to be a fucking 04?  while I was a 28, anways) he didn't actually like the omelette, but he would barter for the omelette whenever he got the hamslice, or vice versa.  I can see the logic, but he didn't have any bread.

Another guy I knew, used to bring those little condiment pouches of honey they had at the chow hall?  he used to gank them, and brink friggen pockets full whenever we went to the field, but he was a genuinely weird person (and yes, thats me saying that) he would treat his MRE like a fucking 8 course meal, I can't remember his name though.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at May 26, 2007 07:42 PM (QTv8u)

105 I think DoN in comman ussage uses YYDDMM or is it YYMMDD?  I think it's YYMMDD, no space, no seperationg, but the navmc1070 for common correspondence requires the DD MONTH YYYY method.  I think.  I hated having to actually write that shit for my commanders.

108 K-rations, MREs, and mud managed to win WWII, and keep the Chi-coms at bay in Korea and Viet Nam (the politicians caused the "redeployment" of troops in the latter). My Dad and father-in-law would have loved some fresh fruit and veggies as they went from North Africa, to Sicily and up Italy.

Even as a fake, this is a joke.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking: they aren't getting their salad bar and this is a basis for swearing? Overreact much, Johnson?

The thing is I don't doubt the content of this is true; the actual memo looks a bit suspect (and its easy as pie to make a PDF file of anything at all, they should have tried something else).

He claims to have been the guy in charge of the get-Osama department of the CIA, but instead of doing that, he was writing op-eds in the New York Times, in July 2001 for Heaven's sake, claiming that international terrorism was a thing of the past.

112 Highlights from the Larry Johnson weiner roast in his comments, so you don't have to go.  Best one at the end:

Larry, if you have any intellectual integrity you'll apologize to General Petraeus after finding out that the document was fake.

Johnson, you are a fraud.

Don't you feel, no YOU ARE A FUCKING IDIOT!

Larry, I hate to break to you, but the eagle on that "official" memo is a picture of a Hummel figurine. I have one on my desk. Unless the Pentagon is working a merchandising deal with Hummel Figurines Inc., the memo is most likely a fraud. And a rather badly done one at that.

My mistake. Upon close inspection of my figurine, it's a Lenox China figurine. See? There's a lesson there. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions. But it sure looked like a Hummel.

...

Nice going, asshole! Nothing like perpetrating a hoax and getting caught in half a day.

I read a document from the military that said 30,000 of our soldiers were ripped to shreds by vultures. That's pretty messed up!

UPDATE: I've received a note from a journalist buddy who say's that the US military Public Affairs Officer in Baghdad says this is a phony document. We'll see. I sure hope that is the case. But it does not undermine the basic point of the vulnerability of the U.S. soldiers to vultures.

You are a friggin' idiot. That's the fakest memo I've ever seen. Who was that supposed to be from? It doesn't look military, and it doesn't look KBR - who runs the chow halls.

Even if real its a yawner.

but this one from one his diehard kool-aid groupies is hilarious

dreamer... you are so far off base... Larry, thankfully, will at least bring out all the evidence, and let us judge for ourselves... based on my knowledge, from many friends and family serving there, is that this is most likely fact, although I too am not pleased...

You should go back and read Col Langs comments on intelligence gathering, and reporting. 135 OK, for anyone who cares, I just dug up the following...

Timeline for May 23rd:

Johnson posted the PDF on his blog at 10:22am EST.

DeYoung posted the article on WaPo at 5:23pm EST.

Iraqsloggers Christina Davidson posted a pic of the PDF and a short article at 5:24pm EST.

Additional nugget: Davidson used Lang earlier in May for a letter he posted from an Iraq veteran.

Conclusion: Lang leaked the PDF to both Johnson and Davidson, possibly also to DeYoung.

Sorry I had to get my nerd on again. Promise I'll stop now.

136 Oh, and See-Dub, I already read through the panel discussion that Larry posted. During the course of it, Larry repeats Valerie's little story about her junior officer receiving a call from the OVP about the uranium.

Oh, and Patrick Lang, the PDF Man of the Hour, reveals in the discussion that he interviewed for a job at the Pentagon early on in the Bush administration. The person who interviewed him: Doug Feith. Needless to say, he didn't get the job.

And all of a sudden, Lang's crusade against Feith ever since (which VIPS has eagerly participated in) makes a whole lot more sense.....

Create a situation, allow others to act on it, then swoop in to fix the failures that they themselves created making it appear as though only they, the Valerie Plame left can adress these issues, which in a way is true, seing as how they created them.

144 I hate to be a party pooper but thats a memorandum form so normal rules go out the window as far as formatting.  Memos are informal communication.

That said even if it was true so what, it's normal.  And I don't mean that in a so what screw the Soldier or Marine type of way but in the even in peace time this happens way.   If you go to a CAX at 29 Palms you eat MREs one meal a day at least and when you do get a hot meal you used to have to eat standing up.  Overseas it is very common to have shortages of all sorts of stuff.  In Iceland we went a week with out bread one time and the exchange was out of everything including Beer.  In Antarctica we almost had a riot because empty cardboard boxes were taking shipping priority over fresh food and Christmas presents.  Limited shipping space affects everyone all the time.

Wicked, I passed grumpy on my way to cranky a long time ago.  In the Air Force it is known as getting your 7-level.

Pork patty had to be hydrated and warmed up if possible.  Get some water in the bag and stick the bag inside your shirt.  Nothing like pork patty, applesauce and sweat.  The applesauce helped a lot in making it edible 'cause it sure didn't look too tasty.

The faux outrage that the leftists are perpetrating on this is just hilarious, they are shocked, shocked to read a memo that hints that our boys, which they support so very much, aren't getting Frappuchinos and Arugala salad with caviar delivered by hand to them in the battlefield? Please elaborate and say specifically which branch of the military or government agency that uses memorandums for informal communication.  Because it sure as fuck isn't the Army.

153 Hmm, on the whole uranium-Niger-Wilson-France thing, I thought of something today. The State Department and all them were not all that convinced that Iraq would be able to get uranium out of Niger, right?

What if Iraq was buying the uranium for.... Libya. Who had a nuclear program. Who's neighbor just happens to be... Niger.

See, no one would believe that Iraq was buying it, simply because of the logistics. That way, intelligence agencies would think it was bogus, meanwhile, the uranium is shipped to Libya with their secret little nuclear program.

This way, Libya's nuclear program doesn't get discovered, a nuclear program that may have been aided by the Iraqis...

The IAEA investigated Libya's nuclear program after we forced them to give it up in 2003, but they never came to any firm conclusions on where they got their uranium from, mostly because Libya wouldn't tell them straight up.

Gee. Wouldn't happen to have a uranium-producing neighbor there, would ya Libya? Oh you do, how interesting.

154 I was in Antarctica for 6 mos (Summer Season) I wanted to winter over and almost had the chance when one of the IDCs had to be medevaced back to New Zealand but he recovered and came back so back I went to NavHosp Philadelphia.

Just to be sure guys I looked it up and memos are locally controlled as far as format and content (at least in the DON) so it is very possible that this is just a routine announcement that would be posted outside a mess hall.  I was getting confused trying to figure out what Rank / Rate MGT/S and MGT/E are but then I realized that the S and E are first initials.  I think MGT is a contract title of some sort.  Which pisses me off cuz I have Larry Johnson and really love it when he gets stuff like this crammed up his ass.

I have to say its amazing what you remember about crap like official correspondence even 11 years after you got out.

The G would be followed by a number, indicating approximate rank in comparisson with their military counterparts, I'm almost positive of that, and I have only been out for 7 years, not 11, and wintering over is the only service medal I would have killed for (since I was peacetime, wartime is different.)

Posted by: Wickedpinto at May 26, 2007 09:53 PM (QTv8u)

example, if MGT was the author, and MGT was a civilian position, on military time, they would have included their position (I think DiGR knows more about this acctually since he's a civvie at the pentagon) it would likely be (assuming MGT is a civvie position, it would be "MGT/12 E. Blah" not just "MGT/Blah"

of course CIA has different rankings I believe.

Every internal memo I wrote or read in the AF was as strictly formatted as outgoing correspondence...and I was a part of three different types of units during my career (maintenance, intel, medical).

During my PME courses, I recall learning about 'informal communication'--a memo is not an example of such.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at May 26, 2007 10:11 PM (QTv8u)

165 No.

Maybe I am making it more confusing.  My point is that:

1.  Overseas this is a fairly common occurence
2.  The nature of this memo is not necessarily indicaive of a fake as much as I would like to catch LJ at that.
3.  That the DFAC may not be run by the military and therefore the use of MGT may be nisleading people into thinking this is a fake.

Of the 3 items number 1 is most important in my opinion.

My personal experience was that in places like hospitals or large duty stations it would be common for the contractors to put out announcements like this.  With Marine Corps units or at forward deployed locations it was genrally the S-4 shop via the Mess Sgt.   As I said that's based on my experience so your mileage may vary.  I can't really say about shipboard I did all my sea duty with Marine units.

Carl Hungus, of course real action is different but in the field I remembed when I would get my hot meal, in the field as a pogue, and I hated how little I got, I don't care if it was "hot" which is a VERY relative term, and I would always ask if I could pass on the hots and get an MRE, cuz at least there was actually food in the MRE.  Strainy corn, thin mash, and a stew that could pass through a collander.

I actually disliked the "field"hots more than I did the MRE's.  like I said, I was a pogue.

Go to http://search.military.com/search/milcom.html and search letterhead.

Goes without mentioning that every federal agency, including the military, have style guides for writing memos and letters.  It is a fireable/disciplinary offense to not include your mail code.

Posted by: dustydog at May 27, 2007 05:47 AM (aqV/Y)

182 @180 and 181

I don't know about in the Army but in the Navy the only people authorized to use letterhead are the CO of a command or someone with By Direction authority.  So when I was at NavHosp Phila if I sent out a notice to all departments that say laid out the flu immnization schedule it went out in letter memorandum form with no letterhead.

I referenced the Department of the Navy Correspondence manual in my comments above where it specifically addresses these issues.

@all

I emailed the US Embassy in Baghdad last night and asked and they confirmed that the embassy is referred to locally as US Mission - Iraq and that the memo was genuine.  I forwarded that e-mail to Ace and he can verify it in anyway he wants and post or not post it.

Posted by: chad at May 27, 2007 08:35 AM (WNcvq)

183 Chad, good on you for looking up the AR regarding correspondence.  I'll give you points for that.  But, no one here said that the Army has a form for their memos. They don't.  But they have strict guidelines on how they are set up.

If you actually go to Chapter 2, there are lots of nice pretty pictures.  Also, regarding the use of the letterhead, it says in the AR you, yourself know about, all you need to know in Chapter 1-18.  Anyone who has to write a memo for any reason is not only authorized to use the letterhead, but they are required.

Posted by: former republican at May 27, 2007 10:23 AM (7rZO4)

184 Thats why I specifically said that in the Navy letterhead is restricted.  I don't know who authored the memo so I can only point out a possibility.

185 Confirming the post by "former republican" about Memorandum Format in the Army.  All rules hold true in the Air Force.  If anyone wants the Gee-Whiz knowledge of how to write an official memorandum for the Air Force, look here (http://www.e-publishing.af.mil/pubfiles/af/33/afh33-337/afh33-337.pdf) and start on page 181.  The other services are very similar.

187 Long-time reader, first-time poster.

I'm a military contractor working in the IZ, and yes, a similar notice did in fact go up last week at the Embassy (well, the Embassy annex, but it's what everyone calls "the Embassy").  But here's the thing -- that notice goes up all the time.  I go to the Embassy DFAC a few times a week, and I'd say that it's been up probably a third of the last year and a half.  The main difference?  No eggs, no fresh fruit.  Big whoop.  I like Froot Loops anyway.

Is this the actual memo?  Dunno -- I'll check tomorrow, maybe.  But it does bear a striking resemblance to the thing, and the information is accurate.  It's also not a huge deal, and it affects far more State Department personnel than military anyway, so the estimable Mr. Johnson is still wildly overblowing the case.

As for the rest of you supposedly "experience" fucknuts, the fact that you are looking up Reg's and dissecting it on your computer, to prove it is a fake, is laughable at best!  Some of you fucknuts are claiming actual experience in the Army, Air Force, or Corps!  Are you KIDDING me?

I spend almost 40 years of my life, associated with, or actually in, the Corp, the US Government, the IC, US Embassies, etc.

It took me exactly 1.2 NANOSECONDS, to glace at the FRAUD in question, and just start laughing my ASS OFF!

You all have to be fucking MILKING ME?  Right, to even 1% think this thing has a shred of Validity?

I usually say there is nothing in this world that is 100% (except Death); well, I just ran into the second; this memo is 100% FAKE; theres not an Interns chance of being in Bill Clintons office, without getting a mouthful of goo, that this thing is real.

Im just astonished that all you who claim to have been in the Military, could even have a discussion, and try to disprove!

Hell, its also obvious, that it was 100% constructed on a MS Word document first, and then PDFd with Adobe Acrobat!

ANY TYPE of Official Correspondence, whether any Military Service, or any US Government Office, does NOT use a picture of an eagle, for Gods sake, they have their own embossed seal; and one puts the fancy box Frames around the header information, nor that god awful green color, what the HELL is that!

This is pathetic!

Im astounded, that any Ass Clowns, like Larry Johnson, his buddy who first posted this, and the so-called Pro-Jihadi Reporter at the WashPo, all who have SUPPOSEDLY seen REAL Official Correspondence in their day, couldve been fooled by this, for even on second!

LARRY JOHNSON:  if you are reading!  I havent tangled with you since Seixons Blog shut down, you unmitigated piece of SHIT!   You lying, traitorous cocksucker, Im still waiting for you to look me up in Atlanta, so I can crush you like the insignificant piece of shit that you are!

You enabled those freaking morons, by even pretending this was the possibility of being real!

"former Republican":  you freaking moron; it's "Julian" calender and "Gregorian" calender, those are your only two choices!

"Octavian" calender hasn't been used since Rome was kicking the crap out of the Gauls (French!)

Chad, IF you emailed AmEmb Baghdad, and they told you that "Memo" was authentic, then someone over there is smoking crack!

Etrigan:  (a fan of Jack Kirby comic books are you??) I don't doubt you, you are in Iraq, and I'll trust your comment that stuff like that goes up all the time; but if some assclown in the Green Zone, is putting up Memo's like that, with that so-called "Letterhead"; the US Government has gone to shit, in the past couuple of years, since Ieft, I can say that!

Chad, you are correct about ONE thing; a Chow Hall supervisor, or someone like that, throwing up a memo to post, is NOT going to use "Offical" letterhead, and in that case, they are going to up a Memo that has NO "letterhead" or any fancy decoration at all; it's just going to say "MEMORANDUM" at the top, and then launch into it.

But, it will ALSO be in the correct format, with correct Offical dating, Subj, To, Ref lines, etc.; all in the correct DOD or US Govt Writing style, not this faked piece of crap, with a damn Chinese figurine thrown in there; what a joke!

191 The US military should have released such a memo long ago, it is sure to encourage the bad guys into targetting supply caravans and supply depots (which of course would be armed and armored in preparation).

192 I'm here in Baghdad, and that text under (I think) a different masthead is up in our DFAC here on FOB Union III. The PDF may or may not be fake, but I read that text today on a piece of paper taped to the paper towel dispensers at the hand washing station. Give me an email address and I'll shoot you a picture of it tomorrow, when I get in from patrol.

193 Hey Dale, just so you know, the U.S. Government doesn't run the chow halls here. KBR does. All our offical memorandums are typed up just as you say, but KBR isn't military.

and Carp, "KBR does" Exactly.

It's NOT official, there might be a truth to the content that is virtually insignificant, but to depict it as an authoritative text authored to explain theatre wide supply is completely different.

It's a distinction with a difference.  Al spiders are insects, not all insects are spiders.  You have to qualify BEFORE! you analyzise, to do it after is Incorect, and a fundamentaly FALSE (not flawed, FALSE) methodology.

195 Man, what you guys offer for brain power couldn't elicit a mouse fart.  Here's the super secret, double probation answer to your "wunderings".  Pat Lang received the message as a word doc.  I asked for permission to post and put it up as a pdf file.  Got it brain surgeons?  Jesus, no wonder George Bush has to rely on half wits like Alberto Gonzales given the bench strength reflected on this blog.
Try dealing with the facts.  A foreign service officer with the rank of Management Counselor signed off on a memo last Monday notifying Embassy personnel that they would not be getting four hots a day and would have to eat MREs.  Who is in charge of the supply convoys?  The U.S. military, not the Embassy.  Why is there a resupply problem?  Because the resupply line is being attacked and disrupted.  Four plus years into this misadventure and we still don't have enough forces in place to secure the lines of communication.
Try thinking and reason before jumping to wild ass conclusions.  You'll find it surprisingly enlightening.

Larry Johnson, was by all indications, 'washed out' of Camp Peary, why else would he be an analyst on the Central American desk, much like Colin Farrell's character in "The Recruit", somehow he ended up in the CTC, until 1996, than spouted off on TWA 800. as a terrorist incident, and then culminated his expertise with that  expert memo, three monthes before 9/11, at the very time that a whole stream of 'chatter' indicated an attack was coming. Shameless as he is, he still links the piece on his site at Berg Associates, where his counter-terror expertise is promoted.

Actually, the memo pretty clearly says that they might not be getting four hots a day and might have to eat MREs.

Further, a similar memo has been posted no less than half a dozen times over the last year and a half -- last summer it was up for so long that I had a vague sense of change when it came down and didn't realize it was down for a week -- and they haven't had to uncrate those MREs yet.

They are emotionally stunted people who use fear, intolerance and hate to further their own deluded self___. It's just pathetic. 234 ;">Skip to next paragraphThe Reach of War; font-family: Arial;">Go to Complete Coverage »

Mr. Gates told the Senate Appropriations Committee, When I speak of a long-term presence, Im thinking of a very modest U.S. presence with no permanent bases, where we can continue to go after ;">Al Qaeda in Iraq and help the Iraqi forces.

He added that in my head he envisioned a force as a quarter of the current combat brigades.

;">Ӫ߻;">,;">Ӫ;">,;">ƹ;">,;">վƹ;">,;">ؼƬ

There are now 20 combat brigades in the country, a number that is scheduled to drop to 15 by next summer. Mr. Gates has previously expressed hope that if security conditions in the country continue to improve, force levels in Iraq could drop to 10 brigades by the end of 2008.

Mr. Gates gave no timetable for reaching that force level or for how long the forces would be required to stay. He added that there had been no detailed planning by the Pentagon about what level of forces would be required on a more or less permanent basis.

A combat brigade has 3,500 to 4,500 soldiers, leaving a minimum of 17,500 combat troops in Iraq under the plan Mr. Gates described. The total American force required would probably end up being at least twice that, because of the need for support troops and other related personnel.

Mr. Gates also laid out at the hearing a Bush administration request for an added $42 billion for war-related expenses in 2008. The request increases to nearly $190 billion the amount the Bush administration is seeking for 2008 to finance military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. In February, the administration asked for $141.7 billion for the wars, an amount that officials said at the time was an estimate that could increase.

The Appropriations Committee chairman, Senator ;">Robert C. Byrd, a Democrat from West Virginia, responded with blistering criticism of the administrations Iraq strategy and warned that his panel would not rubber stamp Mr. Bushs requests for war financing.

The president and his supporters claim that were now finally on the cusp of progress and that we must continue to stay the course, Mr. Byrd said. Ive heard that before. Call me a skeptic, but we have heard this tune before. Yes, havent we?

Antiwar protesters in the hearing room responded with cries of Yes! Yes!

Mr. Byrd later had the room cleared of protesters after they disrupted an answer by Gen. ;">Peter Pace, the chairman of the ;">Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Mr. Gates said $11 billion of the requested money was for building 15,000 heavily armored vehicles designed to better withstand the roadside bombs that cause the majority of American casualties in Iraq.

The Pentagon also seeks $9 billion to repair and refit American equipment stocks. The administration is also requesting $1 billion to train Iraqi security forces, bringing the total 2008 request for training funds to $5.7 billion.

But Mr. Gates said that American troops, under some of the most trying conditions, have done far more than what was asked of them, and far more than what was expected.

MapleSEA has always been about maple story the same level as GlobalMS. MSEA got the Knights of Cygnus, GMS got Koc, MapleSEA got the Pirate class first maple story mesos, then we got it. Basically MSEA has been getting content first. There as much speculation over maplestory mesos when GMS or MSEA would get Pirates or who would get it first, or when MSEA or GMS will get KoC first? Now there is much speculation over the new Aran Class. Currently KMS is the only version of maple story that has this class, but will MSEA get it first or will GMS get it?
